Algae question

I have a large Zoa covered live rock like 7" long. On the end of it there seems to be some sort of Algae growing. It's only in this spot and get's about 2" long. I am afraid it will take over the rock. I know having a picture helps, but I'm at work. I'm just wondering if I should sacrifice a few zoas and break that end of the rock off. I have seen Hair algae in the past and it doesn't look like it. :( My nitrates were at zero 2 days ago (this has been there the last few weeks). Thanks!

Is it brown? I had a brown growth take over some orange zoo's I had. Had to frag off some polyps to save it. Now I wish I took a picture of it.....

It's a pain but you'd have to hold onto the rock without touching the corals and take the edge of a butter knife or use a pair of siccors to scrape it off the rock...algae always comes back though...pk1 is right, just get rid of it if you can without hurting any corals.

It is attached to a really nice zoa. I was just going to take it out with gloves and take a chisel and hammer and chisel off that 2" piece. Good idea or bad idea?
