algae question

Hey guys, My phosphate is really low and I only have my lights on for about 6 hours a day.

I have no fish and just reef in my 12 gal Aquapod.

Sometimes green algae can grow on my zoanthid polyps causing them to be irritated and not open up.

Do you have any suggestions to get rid of it??

The tank is still only about a month and a half old.

thanks!

John
Your tank is really new so you are going to get weird algae out breaks, thats normal you probably already had a brown diatom bloom and even a little red slime. the next step is green algae then even some hair algae. After saying that here are some suggestions that might help your situation.
What's your Alk and Ca levels?
How about some critters to eat the stuff?
Check your flow. Make sure you are getting a good ripple across the water surface this will help gas off CO2 and maintain your O2 which in turn will stabilize your pH equaling less algae growth. REMEMBER, these nano tanks are a lot different than larger reef tanks. for example, if you are topping off with RO water and you use too much you can drop your Alk in a matter of seconds. just something to look out for. Six hours is to short of a photo period your animals are going to show signs of stress. 8 to 10 is good. i would recommend an 8 hr photo period for your situation. If your running your actinic light by itself stop that and run both lights for the same amount of time.
Small water changes every two weeks.
AND Lastly try to get some coralline algae to seed your tank from someone else's tank.
I might be able to help you with that. i have a fast growing species in my system called Mesophyllum nice and pink and it grows super faast!!!
Good luck
Keep on reefin'

Wow that was long I probably could of shortened it a little bit.
Remember patience.

James, you know, they do have medication for shortening that

thanks James! I will look and get a nano koralina because I don't think I have enough flow on the surface.

My alk test kept reading like 12 or a little higher. But my calcium is good.

I have some coralline growing and like half of the tank, but not on the rest of the rocks. I would love to get some to seed my tank. If anyone has some let me know!!

thanks!

Jon -as I have a newer tank as well I feel your pain. I began the process with tap water and have been fighting a bit ever since. I am definately in the hair algae stage which was previously the diatom and cyano stage. Mike and Jake have been great helps by pming me tips and and giving me hope. I am 5 weeeks in and only have a couple of snails and small fan worms to keep me occupied, although I bought some of sulcata's rock and we will wait and see what will come out.

Keep the faith and the nirates down ....Craig.

Coralfarmer,
what's your opinion on Vodka Dosing? I dose myself from time to time, but never my tank....

I'm about to try it on one of my tanks I am very curious to see the results. By the way the amount of Vodka is very small it is in less 1 ML increments.
