Algae scrubber in a canister filter?

Hello guys,
i would like to build an ats through a diy canister filter. I would use a glass cilinder with a screw cap essentially and put red leds and substrate for algae in it. According to you, would it be possible to create an ATS in a canister filter? since i have no sump and i would not like to create one i would use a canister and of course air pump.

A simple design should help understanding
Of course it would be lighted up with red leds.

I remember reading a thread (not sure what site) where someone did exactly this. It worked just fine for him.

Where are the led's in relation to the algae substrate?

If there is a plastic or glass surface in between, it will get coated with algae, preventing much of the light from getting to the substrate for algae growth. So it may require frequent cleaning of the intervening surfaces.
