Algae Turf Scrubber

livin on the salty side
Has anyone on here every built one of these? I have been following a thread on another forum that is extremely interesting and wondered if anyone here has tried to diy one of these. I am thinking of trying it, though I am not much of a diyer...... If anyone is interested I can pm them the link to the thread on the other forum.

I've read quiet a bit about them in the past. There are some pretty interesting ways to build them. From what I have read they are pretty effective, but if the algae decides to crash or die off for some reason it can wreck your whole system.

We all have things in our systems, that if they decide to crash, there goes the system. It is just a big gamble in the hobby.

I have been running a version of this for two and a half years without a skimmer, hair algae plumbs or issues. Once it is set up and running it works great. Mine is just a straight though version. No tipping board. I am getting ready to design a new one for the 125 that I am going to set in this summer.

Yea, give me a few days.... My camera is broken and I will either have to borrowe or buy a new one.....

that is a neat idea. I will have to make some time to read all of that. Are you going to try it at all in your system Lorna. Also Pmed you about meeting.

What you say is very true Phil. Everything can crash at one point or another. The scrubbers are a very benefical to a system and there are many ways to build them . They are low maintence, low electricity bill, less money to keep running depending on the size of them.
Here are some links Tom sent me. I dont know if he sent them to anyone else.
reefsanctuary.com and algaescrubber.net

Josh the algaescrubber.net site was set up by the guy that started the thread link I sent. This type of scrubber won't crash your tank as it is not actually submerged in the water...the water runs over the screen that the algae grows on. If the power fails and the algae dies, it is out of the water and can't pollute your tank.....mind you if the power is out long enough to kill all the algae on your scrubber you have a much more serious situation with your display.....

I am trying to come up with a plan for one. As I have a small tank total volume about 90g I think I won't need a large scrubber.....say 9 x 9 inches.

After reading this stuff, I think I might try one, pretty easy to build and cheap to. I like cheap in the hobby, doesn't happen very often

When I was reading about these it was like 8 years ago. Along time. What I read was clumps of the algae would come off and go into the tanks, or get stuck in powerheads, return pumps and such. These were probably people that where head of the I clean my tank when I feel like it club, and probably let the turf scrubber go unattended. I know no one in the club is that way : )~

Well I have a plan of sorts....Jeff (my husband) is going to help me build it, who knows I may have it done by meeting date...or at least some sort of proto-type.
