Algae

Hello Reef Central,

I have a 37 gallon with a 10g sump, and it is about 1 1/2 month old. I have been having a algae issue for a few weeks now. It's brown looking stuff. I believe it's diatoms but not completely sure, it is possible it could be dinos but it does not look like snot. The algae does have some bubbles on it, but the algae with the bubbles on it could just be diatoms that got microbubbles on it from the return jet as some microbubbles come out of it. Most of thr algae does not have any bubbles on it. It is growing on the rocks mostly and on the back glass as I have not scraped it. It takes a few weeks for it to start growing on the sand. Any advice on what i should do? Will it go away on its own? For filtration im running a bubble magus curve 5, filter socks and 10g water change every 1-2 weeks. Current stock is a clownfish pair. Last time I tested nitrates was a few days ago and it was about 10. Not sure phosphate as I do not have a kit for that yet. Running LED ocean revives for about 10 hours as well. Any advice on what i should do??

I really don't see much in the pictures but sure.. it could likely be diatoms or a typical brown hair/peach fuzz algae... Provided you keep up with proper tank maintenance as it sounds like you are it will pass with time as the tank "matures" and begins to take care of itself more..

I would certainly not run OceanRevive lights for 10 hours if you don't have to.. You have fish only and they don't need lights so you should only turn it on for as long as you are there to enjoy it and certainly don't have it turned up too high.. Just bright enough to enjoy the tank/fish for now..
Reducing the light will have a positive effect on the algae too..

In general most "new tank issues" seem to go away around after just a couple weeks/month and at the 8-10 month mark from my experience tanks have "matured" more and become quite easy to maintain properly..

Do you have any snails,etc...? get ones that target diatoms/film algae if you haven't already..

It doesn't appear to be anything to be concerned about and it certainly isn't at a nuisance level. The bubbles are oxygen which is a byproduct of photosynthesis. If the bubbles remain trapped under a mat/film of growth, then that is a sign of dinos or cyano. Your tank is still young and will most likely go through several algae outbreak cycles as it matures and stabilizes.
