Recycling again after adding 40lbs LR from another tank. I have just beat down the diatoms and now I have a bright yellow/limegreen on the substrate. Have not found any info on this. Any suggestions, if not , I will continue to beat this stuff with lots of cleaning and water changes. Thanks for taking the time-------------Linda

Cyanobacteria can take on several shades, including an electric green to deep green color. If its slimey, produces bubbles and seems to spread like fine spiderwebs across the sand and rockwork, its most likely cyano.

Its very typical of newly cycled (or re-cycled) tanks and should disappear as the ammonia and nitrite values in your water come down. Having good water circulation and good biological filtration will prevent it from persisting for weeks (or months!) and keep it in check in the future.

Just a suggestion, but I have always felt that too many water changes can prolong a cycle. Keep the cyano in check and from choking any critters you have in the tank, but dont change the water more than once a week. You can darken the tank for several days to temporarily kill the cyano that is present, but it just fixes the current outbreak and not the problem. Since the spores for the bacteria/algae will still be in the system, its likely to come back after a blackout.

So, ride the wave and keep water changes to a normal schedule. :)
