Thanks for the update. Good to hear the confirmation from the manufacturer directly that both versions of AF are the same, just different labels. Dosing recommendations for both are the same. ;)

Can I use Algaefix marine for the tank with refugium? Should I move my macroalgae to the other tank before dosing Algaefix marine?

AF has been reported by some hobbyists here in this thread to have negative effects on Chaeto, especially after pro-longed dosing, say about 10 doses. ;)

Here's a summary of my AF Marine experience:
I did 7 once every three days doses from 2012.01.19 till 2012.02.06.
Started once a week doses 2012.02.11.
Each dose is 15 ml on a 120 gal DT and about 15 gal of water in the 30 gal sump.
So far 100% clear of GHA and no issues with my cheato in the fuge.

No peroxide is in AF. ;)

A quote from Randy:

"According to the MSDS, and after a little redjusting for their incorrect namming, Algaefix is 4.5 weight percent of a cationic polymer

Poly[oxy-1,2-ethanediyl(dimethyliminio)-1,2-ethanediyl(dimethyliminio)-1,2-ethanediyl chloride (1:2)]

more commonly known as

Polyquaternium 42

and these other common names:

Armoblen NPX; BL 2142; Bualta; Bubond 60; Bulab 6002; Busan 1507; Busan 77; KA 1700; MBC 115; Polixetonium chloride; Poly[oxyethylene(dimethylamino)ethylene(dimethylamino)ethylene dichloride]; Polyquaternium 42; TB 66; WSCP"

See this thread for more details on the chemical make-up and concerns regarding AF including Randy's comments:

So, we have people using it in reef tanks successfully
Does that mean we are one step closer to accepting the ability of a molecule to selectively work for us?

Found a great deal on AF to pass on to you guy's.

Petsmart.com 16oz. AlgaeFix $16.99

Rock on gang!

I'm just hoping to see some results within the next 2 doses, if not I think I'm stuck plucking and hoping the chaeto takes it over

AF is a biocide which the dose amount has been reduced to kill algae. The active ingredient is a biocide that kills many different micro-organisms at known higher concentrations registered under different names that Randy posted in the thread I noted above. The amount of the active ingredient has effects on organisms at pretty low levels. To say AF is selective for algae only is not necessarily true. AF is a registered chemical product that has been registered with EPA and has undergone at lot of testing to make sure it does what the label states and is safe in a reef aquarium for the pests and marine organisms tested. There are a lot of marine organisms out there. EPA could not test them all. So as with any pesticide things are learned as the product is used over the years. So far it seems to be fairly safe in a reef aquarium from the results we have seen in this thread. ;)

cliff, I'm dosing AF but i have a question regarding the frequency of it, it says every 3 days. i just dosed on Saturday now would my next dose be monday or tuesday?

What populations are we sure it works on outside of the intended target? Did anyone notice a specific collateral loss or are we talking theoretical or strictly microbial/invisible losses

Start with nitrifying bacteria, we must assume it has some element of selectivity (at least in threshold maximums) among microorganisms since these don't die off while other x populations do...

Its helpful to know the specific unintended populations affected by this or any other systemic doser to at least get a real idea of what's going on, I figure af being a for profit doser has been tested, and someone might have specifics on how the biocide targets algae over nitrifiers?
