above and beyond all other water paramiters what do you keep your sg and alk at ? i have always been at 1.026ish and when my water evaporates it gets to 1.028 at times so now i just lowered it to 1.024 to keep it more within correct levels . my alk was hitting 12 -13 and i now have it at 10 which i think is just perfect . just wondering what everybody feels on this subject .fish and coral system i have mostly lps ,shrooms and zoas .

Hey Dave, My tank is 125 with 45 gal sump and is sps dom sg is1.025 and I keep the alk at 7 or so that's about as high as I am able to maintain it at. Mag is at 1350 or so the corals are just growing like mad. Would like to get into the range of about 8 and am slowly raising the dosing. Grant

thanks Grant ,i am fighting with getting my alk down a bit more and im going to be keeping my sg around 1.024 cause i was keeping it a bit high .i king of got lazy and used the ppt side of my refractometer and always shot for 35ppt which i think is just a tad to high .just been wondering where everyone else was at .
thanks

I target 35 ppt (sg = 1.0264). I rarely measure alk, and would be happy with it in the 7-11 dKH range, but most often these days it is near the low end of that range since the limewater I use doesn't supply enough to keep the alk higher.

my lps corals seem to like it at 1.024 as i have lowered it to and today they look much more expanded especially my todds torch and other lps too.i did notice that the reef crystals is much more powder like and mixes much differently as it turned my water whitish cloudy which is much different then it used to be has anyone noticed this ? i also just mixed some up and it seems to be making much less per bucket , have they also changed this ?

I was keeping my SG around 1.024 & was getting awesome growth. I brought it up to 1.026 & a couple of my corals look like they've bleached out. I'm going to bring it back down & see if their colors come back.

The salinity is the only change I've made in the past year.

when you keep th sg that high 1.026 things start to burn .An the chance of parisite goes way up but the color of the fish comes out thats one of the reasons red sea fish look so color full

Why would you say that? That's about the average sg of most of the world oceans. If your tank suffers at natural salinity, you have some other problem going on.

hey randy, could you elaborate on why you don't measure alkalinity frequently for a beginners perspective? is it because your dosing routine manages it without a need for specific alk measurements?

Yes, that's basically it. I know topping off with limewater adds enough for my tanks needs, based both on occasional measurements and on tank viewing. :)

How fast did you make the change? Changing sg too quick seems to be more of an issue than the resulting sg IMHO.

My sg is low right now due to a faulty hydrometer. I'm slowly upping it back to 1.024/ 25 that seems to be the happy place for my tank, but again I've noticed it can handle higher and lower as long as te change isn't made too quickly. IMHO I think this is why an ato is a needed part of a system. Or at least adding top off water on a strict regiment.

My tank sits at about 1.024 with alk at 9.1-9.2 I dose a home made 2 part variant of Randy's reciepe ( thanks Randy ) .
My Ca sits around 420-430 mg @ 1200-1350 ( I just got a test kit so I can now tune it in) and my ph is 8.1-8.2

After playing around I dose 20ml of ca alk and 10 of mg nightly. I run a fuge on opposite a lighting. And I dose strontium / Moly 2-3 times a week and perform ~10% water changes. I used to be anti water changes, but it was out of shear laziness. My new setup is bucketless & boy was it worth while.

1.024 seems to $ for me , but I'm always looking for more growth.

@iam 12-13 is a bit high, but from what I've read as of late, 10-12 should yield higher growth for sps's. ( info via read sea's website)
For most coral 7-12 is great. How many fish do you have and how old is your tank? I noticed that older established tanks with higher fish load seems to want to sit around 7. Newer tanks and those with lower fish loads tend to sit at 11-12. Maybe this is just due to the way I keep my system... Anyone else have tips on raising alk aside from buffering the heck of of it??( pls excuse the spelling and or rambling, I'm posting from my phone)

thats whats funny my system is approx. 9 years old and i have a total of 400 gallons of water with 35ish fish in there . some of my larger wrasses are 9" long but most are 4"-6" long . i feed daily with PE mysis and do rinse and pat off excess water before feeding . my kh was up in the teens and now its about 10 ish today .its always seems high to me but i dont see any real adverse effects ,just always wondering what would happen if my corals were in different conditions . i am bringing a TT to a friend and that will be the third piece that i have in different tanks so i can start comparing .
