Alkalinity test accuracy.

So i pulled the trigger and bought all new kits. Went with RedSea kits. I ran the battery of tests, and when I got to the alkalinity I was very confused. It was reading 7.6dkh, and I had constantly been getting 10dkh with the api. Ran another red sea test. again. 7.6dkh. Pulled out the API to see if maybe for some weird random reason my alk had dropped that much. Nope, sure enough, 10dkh with the API. Ran a 3rd test again with the Redsea. 7.6dkh. I am assuming that I should trust the redsea more then the api. Now i'm wondering if I haven't been chasing a non existent problem this whole time..

I have the Red Sea kit that I got for free and I used it once, my dkh was off by 3 or more when compared with lamotte and salifert tests. I'd be weary with the alk portion of the Red Sea kits...

I found the Alk portion of the RedSea Foundation test so difficult to read accurately I just bought a Hannah checker for my Alk. The instructions were clear but the color change could be weird sometimes. I still use the Ca and Mag portion but run the Hannah for Alk.

If you ever make it down to Riverview for whatever reason and want to bring a water sample, I'll be happy to test it for you and we can find out which test kit is more accurate.

If it turns out to be the RedSea that's more accurate, I have a mostly unused Alk test you can have. Lol

Interesting. The color change was very weird, so in my 3 attempts I tried taking the reading at different colors and all 3 were about within .4 of each other, but still 3 below api

I get same results with Red Sea, salifert, and Hanna. All where accurate to each other for me. And ran each test multiple time and where all same with in reason

On this same issue, with the API Alk test kit, it says to call it when the color goes from blue to yellow. Mine turns a yellowish blue/green color on drops 7-8, but turns full yellow with two more drops.

Which one is the correct? Can you share your personal experience with this kit?

I have the exact same results, I figured if I'm going to guess one way or another I'm going to guess wuss l worse case scenario. So I call it 10 drops.

Pretty interesting thread with some very helpful post. Might think about ditching my RedSea Alk test kit for something more accurate.

I used Red Sea before and ran out and bought api as a band aid. I found them to be fairly close to each other. I do get that blue/green with the API and usually one additional drop turns it yellow and I go by that. For me it was within the same whole number dKH with the alk between the test kits. For example if I read 8ish on the API, it would be like 7.7-7.8 on Red Sea.

Chris,

I have salifert potassium, ALk, PH, MAG, and hope to have today a new CA kit if you want to test when you pick up wave makers.

Regards,
z

yeah, I'll bring over a water sample, would be curious to see what the salifert says. I really appreciate it
