Alkalinity

8 is the natural ocean alk so that's what I am running ... eventhough mine is measured 7 last night so I just crank up the co2 a bit to bring it up to 8

Mike,
If your test is using degrees of carbonate hardness method. I usually try to stay beween 7-12 dKH. if it is in milliequivalents per liter you want it >3meq/l. But always remember that there is always a high- low relationship between calcium and alkalinity.
I would refer you to any article written by craig bingham. you can find him at reefs.org they are a great resource. They have an archive of aquarium frontiers magazine that was around in the mid 90's that had some great articles. just go to the library at reefs.org and you will find all of the aquarium frontiers magazine articles.

Keep on reefin'
James

I finally got my alk dialed in at 8dkh and my calcium at 420 which is within the optimal range.

if any of you have dkh that is different from 8 you will have to look at the alk/calcium chart or calculator and adjust your calcium to the optimal range otherwise you corals are not going to be very happy. Check the chemistry forum if you are looking for the calculator
