Allergic to seasalt

hey guys i got a weird one for you. i setup my tank this past december...shortly after i discovered salt water stings....BAD...as in its painful to even touch the water within a few seconds, and not long after my arms turn red (even if it didnt touch the water) ..heck just touching the salt itself when mixing water..HAH its like touching hot charcoal. Im not being grounded or anything from a powerhead, itll be when im mixing it

i know its supposed to burn alittle, but this is like..BAD..i mean, if i can avoid sticking my hand even NEAR the tank to move a rock or flip a snail, i will

ive tried a few different brands of salt, with no success. I covered the tank up much more, which resulted in some releif in just existing up here..as pretty much since ive gotten it im pretty much always with a cold til i leave the room.

ANything i can do? has anyone had a similar problem?

And strangely, its not just synthedic seasalt. I came into contact with ocean water and same result. Guess i wont be living near the ocean anytime soon huh?

I love my tank, though its nothing to look at..my 2 clowns are in distress now (some sort of internal parasite) and pretty much if i cant save them and figure out this problem i have with the water, im just going to give my setup to the gf

They sell arm length latex gloves. Many people use them when dealing with stinging critters and coral. You can get a box of 500 for pretty cheap from a medical supply store, farm supply store or vets office.

Actually, see if you can get those gloves in Nitrile. If you have a latex allergy (becoming more common these days) you will have a box of 498 and a nasty rash.

they also make a rubber version that are looser fitting. They are pretty heavy duty. I would be worried about water getting in over the top.

What works well for that is to get some large rubber bands at an office supply store and slip them over the glove and push it up to just below top, it'll keep the water from going into the glove :rollface:

I have to rinse off right away.
Yet I can surf for hours or dive in the ocean w/ no problem.
I've always wondered why this is?

In some sense, I don't want to be discouraging, but I'd probably give up the hobby if I were in your shoes. At least check with a doctor to see what you're risking, IMO.

may want to try switching salt brands. being they are al synthetic you may just be allergic t an additive one brand uses and ok with another. just a thought.

i would get ahold of your doctor, he might have a easy solution for you and you wont have to give up this wonderfull money pit
