Almost a Complete Disaster!!

I was awakened this morning by a gurgling sucking noise, the kind you dread, I knew right away that my sump was empty or near empty. I ran to my dining room expecting to see 150 gallons of water on my floor and an empty tank. To my relief though the sump lost only about 15 gallons of water. What happened was my skimmer output was spurting water out of the sump onto the floor. It was all my fault. what i do and what ive been doing is sometimes to get a more wet skimmate I raise the riser pipe to where its taller then the sump wall, to keep the water from flowing over the side I wedge a piece of lexan between the sump wall and the sponge on the riser, well it just so happened that the lexan slipped down and water came out. Im so stupid, i got cocky because I have been doing this for a month so far with no problems. Luckily I did a water change yesterday and I didnt throw out the old water so I had enough to top the tank back up. Checked my salinity and it was good. Either way I have to do another water change again, plus im going to finally do the gate valve mod to my Euro Reef.
Thanks for reading just had to tell my story, im lucky all that went out was about 15 gallons of water, and my dining room is tiled as well. BTW this was on my 125 reef.
