Ok guys, I first want to say its a 40g with a wet/dry filter, has filter bag in it all bio-balls taking out and I have a Hofer Gurgle buster on the "U" Tube overflow.

Thing is, I've been doing everything people told me to do to make it quiet. Like the Hofer Gurgle Buster, they said do that and it'll be silent..did it and it makes a gurgle sound alot real loud. My filter sock, people told me it'll make it quieter as well..put that in no.

It sounds like God is taking a huge **** in my house, I mean the sounds are like its down puring rain in my house. I can't be in that room without flipping out cause of the sound.

What can I do to make this thing quiet. If it take me to take it all apart, drill and all that, I'm doing it this thing is way to fricken loud.

Also on my stand I don't have a back to it, you think if I add a back that would help?

Just please help!!!!

Try sticking a peice airline onto the standpipe where the water enters on the backside of the overflowbox. The airline will cause the "gurgling" to enclose around it and take the air in a little farther down the drainline. You will have to play with it to find a "sweet spot", but I've been using this method with very good results. Hope this helps. TinMan

I have grown to enjoy the sound of rushing water; kinda hypnotic in a way.

That is (honest to goodness) how I "fixed" my problem. Is the noise coming from the overflows, or from the water entering the sump?

The overflow just once in awhile makes a loud sucking sound

But the wet/dry is loud as hell from the water going into the water bag

I managed to quiet my overflows by switching from a Mag 18 to a Mag 12. This was discovered by accident; I was using the Mag 12 as a backup pump while cleaning the Mag 18. The silence was immediately noticable. Do you have a ball valve on the pump output where you could lower the flow and see what happens?

As for the water entering the sump, if the water from the overflow drops straight down and enters the sump perpendicular to the surface, it's going to make noise. You could use a few elbow fittings to change the angle and lower the noise. Kind of like using the toilet; aim at the edge and not directly into the deep end!!

Ok, I'll try, I have a Mag5 on my its only a 40g tank so yea. And I have my hose from my overflow go into a sock holder so it does aim pretty straight

I bet it is coming from large bubbles forcing their way down to the drain. You can help alleviate this by putting a bubble extractor on the drain pipe. You might have to stick a length of airline tubing in it to quiet it down further. I had this same problem with friends 75g and now it's quieter than my 29g tank. Here is a side view of a tank and it's drain pipe. The pipe has a Durso standpipe. The piece that sticks up is under the stand. Just "T" off your drain line, run length of PVC vertical, and cap it. Drill a hole in the cap and insert a length of airline tubing. This will allow the large bubbles to escape before they are forced underwater in the drain section of the sump and out the drain which makes that horrid flushing noise.

Right now its all hose that goes from the overflow to the wet/dry. So are you saying take the hose off and use PVC all the way down?

And also I don't quiet understand what your saying, I got the part to stick the tubing down farther, but when you were saying "T" off and all I got lost
