Alternative/Inexpensive Filter Media

Anyone use an inexpensive alternative to a typical "spongelike" filter media? Something like the aquaclear sponges? I saw a "natural" material filter that was colored blue at a chain home supply store, but didn't buy it since it is an unknown. Thanks.

Depends what you are using it for.. I'd buy the stuff in the pond section and cut it to meet your needs. Speaking of, I need new pads for my Phosban reactor..

I wonder if a floor buffer pad would wourk. The ones for the industrial sized buffer/stripper/polishers. They come in different colors and the colors are related to the courseness of each pad. White/creame is the softest, then red, then green, then black being the coursest and most abrasive. dont know if theres any chemicals in them or not

I started using the green scotch bright pads for my reactor. They are dirt cheap and easy to cut up............just an idea for ya!

i left one of those in a bucket with salt water, was in for about 3 days and the green leached out. may have been the type i got from the dollar store tho
