Alternative to Mag24?

hahnmeister, I see you have a deltec skimmer listed in your sig. What do you think about it? I was looking into one for my 240g.

I also run a Deltec. Really nice skimmers and are also very quiet. They use Eheim 1260 NW pumps. There is a Deltec sponsor forum here if you are looking for product information and recommendations.

Actually, I just called and emailed them, but no response. I have a nice AquaC EV400 skimmer, but it is powered by a somewhat loud Mag24 as well. The noise level is my main concern, but if I can also improve the skimmer, maybe I will. I cannot find a submersible pump that would substitute for the pressure rating of a Mag24 that could work on an AquaC. Their skimmers require such pumps.

Yeah, the injected skimmers do need large pumps. I think an external pressure pump like a Panworld would work well. H&S skimmers are also very nice Eheim 1260 powered skimmers. Similar to Deltec. If you are not heavily stocked, a Deltec 701 or 851 would work well. The H&S equivalent would be an A200-1260

702 is a beast!

yes, but it seems to fit best with an Eheim 1260 feed pump, which I have. Expensive though - I almost NEVER see people selling Deltecs on Ebay.

The deltec I own is not a skimmer (I prefer my DIY ones still), but a calcium reactor. They have the highest dKH output I have ever seen due to their fluidized media design, so I bought one.

Nice skimmers, dont get me wrong... but I just cant justify the price myself. I, as well as many others here at RC, have made better for 1/2 the price. IMO, the only reason I would look into the deltec is if you want one with the Self Cleaning Head, otherwise, I would also check out skimmers by these companies...

H&S
Euroreef (RC series)
Royal Exclusiv
Aqua Medic (5000 series 'baby' (or shorty2) is a favorite of mine and what I based my DIY skimmer on)
Reef Octopus
GEO

Many of these are also expensive! But thanks for the list. If I could make a good one on my own, and if I had the time, maybe I would.

From what I remember, yes, the BKs by Royal are more expensive, but the H&S are worthy alternatives to a deltec that I would strongly suggest comparing. They usually have better build quality and also sport the eheim 1260 NW pumps (they share the patent with deltec from what I remember), but for less $$$. The GEO is a cool alternative because you can get something custom made.

If you want the best bang for the buck, I would look into the reef octopus skimmers... www.octopusskimmer.com
