Hello everybody. I'm looking for alternative pumps to replace a rather loud/noisy pump I am currently using. Right now, we're using a mag 7 for the return pump, but it has a continuous loud hum to it. We've tried placing it on extra foam pads, mouse pads, etc., and still can't get it to quieten down. When everything is turned off, ( the tv, etc.), you can hear it hum at the other end of the house. And of couse, we were already using it when I did a search here and found that this type of mag pump seems to be one of the louder ones of the brand. I've seen others recommend using an eheim, and for comparison, it seems to be a decent replacement. But, I noticed it uses metric sizing. I would like to find something that has standard sizing to match the tubing and plumbing I already have on the system with the mag 7. Does anyone know of a reliable, quieter replacement that is using standard size inlets and outlets?

I'd like to find a quieter pump too. Has anyone tried the Pentair Aquatics/Rainbow Lifegard Quiet One Aquarium Water Pump?

Well, after looking into these pumps, and from what I've noticed from pics, the Eheim looks like it sits flat using only a base plate, while the oceanrunners looks like it uses suction cups to help cut down the vibration noise. And although the eheim's reputation seems to be a really good one, the oceanrunner's price looks a little better. lol Has anyone else used the o/r's and can tell me how reliable and durable they are? With the mag 7 that we're using now, it has 1/2 inch fittings, and I can see when I change pumps, I'm going to have to use either 3/4 or 1 inch tubing and fittings. (Just according to which pump I go with.) No big deal on that, but I definately want something that's comparible to what I'm using but much quieter.
Thanks sjm. 1/2 inch is the size of the inlet and outlet on the mag 7 so I just kept everything the same size and it's giving me some pretty good surface agitation. But do you, (or anyone else), think that by staying with the 1/2 inch could be why the mag 7 is so noisy? Or are they just the most noisy of the mag pumps?
Using 1/2" plumbing on the Mag7 is a huge flow restriction. I don't think that would make it noisier though. I have owned a Mag3/5/7/9.5. The Mag7 was by far the noisiest pump I have ever owned. If you are happy with the level of flow you have now, you can try this:
Replace the impeller with a Mag5 impeller which will convert it to a mag5. Replace the plumbing with 3/4" or 1". You will have more flow that you do now and a quieter pump.
