ammino acid overdosing

so im a big fan of dosing only what you can test for but recently i tried AA a few times and i like the results very much.

i few things come to mind though since we don't know exactly the consumption rate of AA and if there is possibility of something harmful accumulating.

first thing that comes to mind is if an AA overdose would feed nuisance algae growth.

second, can AA feed bacterial growth like carbon dosing would.

thanks

Yes, AA can cause algae growth. As a consequence I under dose it relative to instructions with regard to amount and frequency. It should not act as carbon dosing (VSV) does.

maybe its a good idea to keep an eye on nitrates and phosphates. i too dose less just to be safe, thanks

Greetings All !

Amino acids can be a powerful nutrient source for bacteria. There is no question that components of the various amino acid formulae marketed for corals are also being consumed by the marine bacteria in our systems. Whether or not a specific amino acid can be utilized by a specific bacterium depends on the structure of the amino acid, and the genetic profile of the bacterium.

This shouldn't be too surprising, given that "standard" amino acids are typically used to synthesize proteins and other biomolecules, or oxidized to urea and carbon dioxide as a source of energy. Research in the realm of microbial ecology has been documenting this kind of stuff for a while. For example ...

"The most intensive growth of bacteria was observed in the presence of amino acids, while carbohydrates were utilized less actively."

tmz: I've seen good results with zoavit and ultralith AA. they are more concentrated so even though they are pricey a bit, they last. only need to use drops at a time. with seachem AA concentrate and vitamins, its easy to find and not so expensive. try petsmart. you have to use about 5ml per 50gal twice a week or so.

AA are really only intended for use in tanks with extremely low nutrients. I would rec starting with 1/4 the rec dose and building up very slowly while watching very closely for ill effect. Powerful stuff.

i agree with the last statement now that my parameters are in check. when everything was messed up and corals were stressed, i would get a noticeable polyp extension improvement from AA after using it. now that i figured out how to use my calcium reactor and kalk reactor and parameters are in check, polyp extension is better then ever and i don't use AA anymore, i just feed the fish.
