Ammonia and Nitrites

I would suggest a cover on the tank any fish will go carpet surfing given the right circumstances. Lots of folks use a clear screen covers, myself included

i've got some extra egg crate i can use. Do you think that is good?

Egg crate is actually a light diffuser and believe it or not fish can still jump through the holes.

BRS has clear screen mesh and you can get a window frame kit from lowes or depot. They are really easy to make.

+1, the clear screen blocks less light and will prevent the fish from jumping out of the tank.

I actually bought the egg crate from brs. the holes are pretty small (maybe half inch) and i can't see any fish jumping through them. I'd be surprised. I can see the egg crate blocking some light though. I'll pick up some clear screen from them. Definitely a good idea.

I'd get a jawfish in a heartbeat if I could deal with a 4" sand / rubble bed in my tank.
+1 on the screen top. The brs kit is good, you can also make it yourself a little cheaper out of a screen frame and bird netting from homedepot. I've even heard off fish getting through the 1/4" mesh, but it seems much less likely. Very careful reefers will double up the mesh so the holes are a bit smaller. The 1/4" stuff is what almost everyone uses though

I guess forget about the Jawfish then. I've got about 2" of sand. Oh well.

Why not go with the 1/8" stuff instead of the 1/4" if theres a chance the fish can get through that? They have both available.

I purchased the 1/4" clear screening from BRS and a screen kit and additional corner pieces from Home Depot. HD had the kit for $10 vs BRS for $30 or so. After a few cuts with the dremel I was able to make 2 custom tops including the cutouts for my overflow intake and return lines, and for the HOB filter on my QT. Plus i've got lots of clear screen left if anyone needs.

My question is do I need to cycle my QT or can I fill it with water and add a fish now? Its been running for about a week. I added ammonia to start the cycle and its holding at around 2.5. No nitrites yet. I was thinking about a bottle of Biospira but not sure if its worth it for a 10 gal QT. I did take a small piece of LR from my DT to put in there. Was trying to get in into the filter but it won't fit. I'm soaking a sponge in my sump DT now and was going to add that to the QT too.

Is there anything else you guys recommend?
