Ammonia help

The Amquel Plus will confuse some test kits. I forget the dosing instructions, but I think daily is fine. I would also be doing as many 25% water changes as patience and funds permit, maybe one a day.

The reason I asked about the water is I dont want you ADDING ammonia to your tank.

Yes like Bert said, daily is fine. Water changes would be good to, however, do yourself a favor. When you get more water from the LFS, test a little to make sure ammonia is 0.

If you dosed today, dose again tomorrow and check on Tuesday. I think you'll be fine.

Remeber though, might take a few days before you can turn your skimmer back on.

Good Luck :)

clown fading

since this ammonia problem I have noticed that my clown is not doing so well, he is swimming funny up at the top and has lost his usual luster....could this be due to the ammonia problem, like i said before nitrates less than 5ppm, ph 8.3, nitrite 0ppm, water temp 80, salinity 1.026...I am so sad, he was my favorite. all the other fish are doing great, the clown is the newest to the bunch and I have heard that sometimes fish just die, he does not seem to have any disease. and he really never ate much, not like my other fish...they are pigs...

my hubby is on his way home from the lfs and we will test it for ammonia.....thank you Billy for all your help, I know that with time things will go back to normal.

Did the clown start this after your first dose of Amquel ? The one draw back of Amquel is that it eats up oxygen in the water. Your clown might be more sensitive to this than the other fish. If you got an air stone and a pump, throw it in, it may help.

Oh, Heather, it never ends for you two. I losk my clowns during a freak spell of phytoplankton about a year ago and haven't tried them since. I have managed to keep the rest of them for the past year. I am having a hard time thinking that the NH4 is killing the clown, but I have seen stranger things. Don't stress about losing a fish though (did you check behind the tank for the angel?). I would hold off on buying any fish until the tank settles down for at least 2 months. That will give you some practice in the art of the maintainace phase of aquarium keeping. After losing my clowns, I waited almost 6 months before adding any other fish. Then I added B/G Chromi, a pretty easy fish to keep. Then I added the blue tang another 4 months later. Before each new addition, I like to make sure that I can keep the tank stable for an extended period of time. I add snails, inverts, and easy corals, but no fish. Good luck to you, keep us updated.

answer to billy first....yes after the amquel, but he never seemed all that good once we got him, he barely ate and seemed to loom at the bottom. now on to pvt....I checked the WHOLE tank, I think the hermit had him for lunch...I am gonna hold off on buying any fish for quite some time...if you read my previous posts, you will see trates are coming down with help of a skimmer and a lot of water changes..now it is ammonia.....it never ends..lol by the way my corals and lr are looking pretty damn good i must say!!!

Well, I dont think it would hurt..... Emergency ? I dont know.... If the clown wasnt looking all that great before, I'm sure it'll wait till tomorrrow. If you dosed the amquel earlier, it should start going away soon. If the clown looks bad in the morning, dont dose again untill you get the air stone..... thats my take anyway. :)

my clown died...i will get a stone tomorrow, just did the water change and will do amquel tomorrow, all other fish are fine, they have been with me through high trates, ect...I think they will make it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thank you RC!

Thank you RC!

Just a huge THANK YOU to RC!, with all the help from fellow reefers and a little luck all my parameters are perfect! I am so greatful that there are people out their to help newbies with these type of situations.

Very good! Like I said before, if you are adequately happy with your current occupants, I would hold off on new livestock additions for 6-8 weeks to give you a chance to fine tune the "maintainance" techniques and give you plenty of time to research and determine what you feel is best for your situation. I think that this will make you much happier reefkeepers and make the hobby more of a pleasure than an obligation.

How has that skimmer been working for you lately?

skimmer works great, seems it had a "breaking in" period, but now we get lots of foam and gunk from it....good thing is we dont have to do a wc every other day anymore, that was getting a little insane, now we can go every other week or so depending on how the water tests, I am glad that my tankmates made it through this tough spot, they are all eating and have never looked better as do my corals, once again keeping my fingers crossed that no more crazy "drama" for awhile.. at least another week/month or so..haha
