Hi all!

Tank Specs:

Coral Beauty
3 Yellow Tail Damsels
Lawnmower Blenny
Red Firefish
5 Nassarius Sails
2 Emerald Crabs
Peppermint Shrimp
A mix of blue and red legged hermit crabs around 13 in total.
A few Turbo and Margarita Snails
Small Octo Frogspawn
Small Zoa colony
A few mushrooms
Small Kenya Tree
Purple Star Polyps

For a few months now, we have been having an ammonia issue. Everything will read at 0ppm except ammonia which usually stays around .25ppm. At first, I attributed the ammonia level to my husband over feeding them; he would feed a whole cube every three days. The only time it has read at 0ppm was when my husband changed all the filter pads in the Fluval.

Within the past few weeks, cyano has been growing like crazy. I didn't think it was an issue because every water test read the same. I did a water test a few days ago because I noticed the frogspawn and zoas weren't out and about like usual. The ammonia was still at .25ppm, but my research indicated everything could be at 0ppm because the cyano was consuming it all, so I decided to do a 50% water change. We changed out about 27 gallons of water. After a few hours, the frogspawn and zoas came out, and all seemed well. The next day, I tested the water again. This time the ammonia was at .50ppm. The second Firefish we recently bought is nowhere to be found either. Could the levels have risen that much if he died during the night? I added some detoxifier to the water, but the corals still aren't happy. Any idea where this ammonia could be originating from? We tore the tank apart looking for the missing Firefish, but not a single bit of him can be found. Next steps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
