ammonia problems

I have tested my tapwater and it seems to be yielding ammonia possibly from chloromines. I added Stress Coat to the water being tested and tried again but no change could be seen. Are the ammonia and chloromine levels still dangerous? It says on the bottle that the water may still show signs of ammonia even though it has converted all ammonia and chloromines to harmless forms. I don't want to put poisonous water in my tank! What is going on here?

Your tank is a 35g tank max water change should be 25% and that only equals 8.75g of water. Go buy water at the grocery store for 7-8 bucks and save yourself the worry. Your only asking for trouble with tap water.

Would it be more worth the time and effort to just buy LFS saltwater or is it usually better to go with grocery store water and make it myself?

As long as the LFS water is NSW. Not just tap water mixed and treated. You will also want to find out when your LFS gets there water and try to buy right when they get it in or with in a few days. Old NSW will have high Nitrates. Test it

With regards to the dechlorinator product, even though the test shows i still have ammonia does it mean its still 'dangerous' ammonia?

I would think if it shows up on the tests, it's still dangerous. I'd not trust it. Buy some water at the store, save yourself more headaches.
