I'm thinking about doing a 3 gal water change weekely in my Aquapod 24, how does this sound? I've read everything from 10% - 25% weekly, monthly, bi-anually, and don't do water changes unless something is wrong. I'm figuring that 3 gals is a little over 10% of my volume. Thoughts?

Weekly. This will help dilute any poultants and replace trace minerals. You are on the right track.

I do 3 gallons twice a week in my 24. But I had a pretty heavy load. Thats something to consider too.

How many fish do you intend on having?

A couple of my friends have 1 fish and its a bleeny and another has a goby. They do 3 gallons every other week.

New School:

I never do water changes ... only top-off with supplements to correct evaporation and chemical depletion! Once you figure out, by testing, how much of whatever element you're tank inhabitants are depleting, you should just be topping off with the correct amount of those chemicals; of course when I say top off I mean adding water. Unless you add/deduct and inhabitant your top off solution will remain the same every time you make it.

Why would you do WC's if your tank is stable/healthy?! If you do a WC to a healthy tank you're more likely to disrupt your parameters rather than promote stability... If you are doing WC's to correct things such as nitrates etc due to heavy bioload ... your tank is not biologically balanced and it should be addressed with more filtration of whatever kind.

I use this mechanism ...
