Amphiprion melanopus

75Gallons

I saw a cinnamon clown at my LFS yesterday and I fell in love. I would like to get a small pair and raise them. Is there anyone who has this type of clown that could give me some advice on caring for them. This isn't an impulse thing btw. My tank has been up and running for about 6 months now. I plan on getting a BTA in a couple weeks and after a month or 2 buying a young pair of cinnamon clowns. In the meantime any advice would be greatly appreciated.

great fish!! very territorial though, be careful what fish you house with them. what size tank are you running? These guys can get large and can hang with maroons in the temper dept.

I totally agree with the attitude statement lol my clowns quite often was spawning but even when they were'nt the attacked my gloves everytime i was doing anything in my tank, they are so funny.

hm...I thought the maroons were more aggressive than these guys....that's interesting! I have my guy in a nanocube right now...and I'm getting ready to move him to a 30 gallon...so he'll have tons more space and he'll be getting a small anemone as well...but he's already territorial enough..not sure adding an anemone is a good idea! lol :D Erin

I think the main difference is maroons get bigger and are territorial over a larger part of the tank, where i found cinnamon clowns are really just looking after there imediate home (anemone, hammer what ever it may be lol)

hmm i bought a bigger one and a smaller one to try and pair these guys up in my 90g and well the female went straight into my BTA after about a week and is really territorial about all she can see from inside her home . . . The poor little guy hasnt learnt his little submission dance yet and as such isnt allowed within the confines of the anemone . . . its been 2 weeks now since she moved in so hopefully she will let him in soon . . . they hang out together all the time outside of the BTA like they are on a date then when its time to go home she shooes him off . . . Readily accepts food and my female doesnt attack me or bite just hides in the anemone when i try and feed the BTA . . . good luck . . .

Yes I did have that problem aswell. the larger female never really did let the male in the anemone but the did lay eggs several times so they must have paired.

I have a pair of Inland Aquatics New Caledonina melanopus. They are beautiful fish, but they are very territorial as previously stated, moreso with me than the other inhabitants.

Whenever my hand is in the water on the anemone side of the tank, I am bitten a couple of times (those little teeth hurt, lol) and have seen a little blood dripping on more than one occasion.

They seem to bite harder when after having spawned.

They are beautiful fish and I'd really miss them if I lost them.

I HAD one in my 58. Was the meanest SOB ever, everytime I did a WC it would bite me. The last straw for me was when it wouldn't allow me to put any frags into the tank. It would remove them and "throw" them in the corner.

I've not seen mince move frags, but I'd bet $$ they do. Pretty much everything gets epoxied in now if it's in their half of the tank, lol!!!

Another good way is to check the ventral fins. If they are black, itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s most likely a Cinnamon. If they are orange or red, itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s most likely a Tomato.
