Amphiprion percula "Onxy" (Onyx Percula Clown) Breeding Log!

Kinda like my last batch Matt. My headbands start at 8 or 9 days. What are hydriod medusas? Thought maybe the arthropod pictured in my post may have had a big lunch. not sure. Best of luck. Carl

Carl, hydriod medusas basically look like tiny jellyfish in the tank...1-2 mm in diameter in mine.

Well, no headbands yet, but I did add a small amount of selcon "coated" BBS.

From what i can tell it looks like I have significantly fewer larvae today, yet I've only found one body on the bottom. wierd.

Matt

They are hiding in the corners by the silicon. Typical meta behavior.

Actually, not a single one is doing that yet Kathy...I think we're not quite at meta yet based on how my past broods have gone. However, virtually all the brine nuaplii has disappeared ;)

Is day 5 old enough for BBS.Thats how I killed the 4 that made it through day 1.I added BBS and wack, all 4 on the bottom in 2 houres. It may have been the shells also. When is right to start BBS.

Well, in any event all is well with the babies I have...I think I have to revise my estimate downwards...maybe I have 50-60 larvae from Batch VI Haven't been finding bodies or anything, but that's what it looks like at this point.

The eggs constituting Batch VII turned from bright orange with the white dot at the tip to a deeper brownish coloration this morning. I'd have to read back to see when that happened in my earlier batches...that could give me an idea of whether batch VII was laid Saturday or Sunday.

12-19-06 and 7 days old on Batch VI - the ammonia had crept up a bit over the last 24 hours, so tonight they got roughly a 75% water change and are no worse for the wear. My big concern is that the water was looking more "cloudy" than "tinged green", thus the big water change. The rotifer population is now pretty reduced...I may add some phyto in just to keep things in balance. The larvae are all to eager to eat BBS and I tried some otohime A today as well.

That's the news!

Matt

yeah i tried oto a also. i do not see them atacking that but definetly the bbs now. do you see yours eating the oto?

what ive been doing is a very slow 24 drip of fresh water to combat the ammonia.i siphon in the morning and at late night.

i started a phyto culture but one of the bottles today was brown tinted. i was told thats a crash. so i discarded it.

have you seen any headbands yet matt?

Brown tinted to me wouldn't be so much of a crash as a loss of a pure culture, unless of course it's T-Iso (which is orange to brown in my cultures).

I haven't seen any headbands yet, but I do have the first few starting to take on the "waggle" swimming characteristic. Most all of my larvae are right at the surface and holding in the strongest areas of current. I think in my prior batches headbands have showed up 9-11 days? Maybe a bit sooner on these! This batch also appears to be a more vivid orange in coloration than the prior larvae at this point...it could just be the lighting (different bulbs) or it could be a result of the greenwater technique early on. Since all of mine are taking down BBS with gusto at this point, I'm probably not going to utilize much phytoplankton going forward...I just don't think it'll help at this point.

i have a couple lil onyx that came from Rod about a month ago is is ok to continue to feed bbs,
now that they are older whenever i feed it they eat it all and have very full bellys is it safe for them to eat a few cysts of shell if they are getting the bbs

matt i have some stragglers so thats why im still introducing the rotifers/live phyto , but in substantially smaller amts.

Yup, straglers need the food!

12-20-06 7.5 days on Batch VI and if looked at from above, they have their white headbands. If looking from the side...you can't see it. Most all are simply zooming around the water surface in higher current areas. Another day or two and I'll expect a fair amount of "Wagglers".

Late last night I added some freshly harvested T-Iso and Tetraselmis...looking at the tank water to day it DEFINITELY looks MILKLY, not "greenish tinged". Ammonia levels are nil. Despite this, I may do yet another water change just to be safe.

Matt

12-20-06 - it's the end of day seven, leading into day 8, and I gave the larvae in batch VI some Oto. A again this evening...to my surprise several started whacking the surface for it! Looks like daily water changes are in the future plans...

Matt

Last update before bed...I completed another big round of water changes on my broodstock tanks and took the time to siphon off the bottom of the Perc Larval tank...they also got a feeding around midnight of BBS again...man they clear out food pretty fast (unless it's Otohime ;) )

Tomorrow's to-do list for these guys is FEED FEED FEED + hatching more brine shrimp + bringing the tank's running capacity up to 9.5 gallons or so. Currently ammonia is at 0 - hoping to keep it that way through extended holiday weekend without requiring any water changes etc..

Batch VII will most likely end up ignored...may or may not be home when they hatch, and I technically don't have a place to put them anyway at the moment (gotta sell off those GBG's!)

Matt

Batch I update - 12-21-06 makes them 82 days old now...Spotty, Stripey and Runty are all hangin' in there. Runty is now developing a 2nd stripe but it's definitely more apparent on one side than the other. Spotty and Stripey are now developing pronounced black "shoulders" behind the headstripe...starting to show their true heritage perhaps. I still can't tell if their 2nd stripes are going to "fill in" or if they'll be misbars.

Batch III Update - - the three from Batch III are now 55-56 days old. 1 of Batch III has a nice vertical stripe from top to bottom...definitely no misbar there.

So if Batch I all end up as misbars, I totally chalk it up to the learning curve and something I didn't do well enough on my first rearing attempt. Hoping for much better results on Batch VI.
