Amphiprion percula "Onxy" (Onyx Percula Clown) Breeding Log!

Batch VIII update - 2.5 days post hatch - well I checked in on Batch VIII this morning...the water was yellowish, pretty clear, and guess what - all my larvae where at the front or back sides of the aquarium. 12 bodies on the bottom as well.

I added in 1L of Tetraselmis and 1L of Nannochloropsis - in seconds all my babies were back in the middle of the water column.

Ammonia has crept up to the "alert" level...I don't have time to do anything about it now, but will likely have to do the seiving I've been putting off + a water change or at least a water addition when I return from work this evening.

Embryoguy, weren't you having this exact problem? I'm gonna go with phyto...I *though* the yellowish tint my water had last night was leftover T-Iso, but judging that no further change occured between light's out and light's on today, I'm going with insufficient phyto as the cause for the larvae hugging the sides (and dying off)

Batch VI update - how old are they now? No time to check. Just wanted to let you all know that the growout tank they share with the GBG's got 6 gallons out and 5 gallons in late last night...Ammonia levels have stayed in check, but the water had yellowed. I replaced the carbon in the Duetto filter as well...we'll see how things flush out. I *almost* screwed the pooch again as well, as I left the Duetto at the end of the aquarium where night-light comes in...caught that mistake right away this time and moved it back to it's proper location at the other end of the tank.

FWIW,

Matt

Im not sure why the ph was so low it was Freshly mixed salt water. i filled the tank adjusted the salinity then added the canister filter let them all run for a day then checked params and thats what i came up with for ph i used tropic marine salt so it may be low but then again my 300 is at a ph of 8.3 using the same salt so im not too s ure whats going on

oh i only have a light issue for the first 2-3 days. ill push more light on my grow out tank based on your thoughts.

im going to have T5's on my grow out tank ill have 4 bulb setup driven by an icecap ballast. so i think after meta if they do need something from the light that should help.

but i have to get to where my fish are laying eggs im still so far behind i feel sometimes like i dont know if i will ever get started.

im getting a brownwater culture from the public aquarium here which is what they are using with their breeding program and im going to start culturing rots and what not and feeding to my tank just to get the hang of it.

Batch VIII update - now 3 days post hatch. Ammonia is definitely up, showing an olive green on the alert. I have 3 gallons of new clean water going into the tank for starters, but it's late and the lights have already gone out. All tied up busy with wedding stuff...hope these guys tough it out!

Matt

Quick update - the 3 gallon water addition brought the ammonia way down...not quite at the "safe" level, but just barely above it. Tomorrow they'll get drawn down, some diluted and some seived + more phyto...looks like a major crisis averted.

Matt

1L of Nannochloris went in this morning - more water changes are on the horizon as the ammonia level is back up to "alert" ;)

PLENTY of baby clowns running around though!

Matt

Sorry about getting in late, but I just want to add that I think what your doing is great!! I love how your putting the bigger guys in a tank with corals, and stuff. It will show your fish to host early, and when you sell them people want have to wait a year for the tank bred fish to learn to host something, lol. Good luck, and keep the pics coming. I like to follow when people progress with stuff, :).

2L of a poor Nannochloropsis culture was added in this am. Haven't gotten around to thinning things out and ammonia still appears to be up. Found 3 more bodies on the bottom this morning, but for the most part things seem fine.

Matt

1-11-07 - Batch VIII is 5.5 days old this morning, no DOAs, and they got 1L of T-Iso today. The tank is basically running at full volume now. Haven't gotten around to any water changes or selcon enriching of rotifers (wedding planning is taking up a LOT of free time). That's the update for now!

OH CONGRATULATIONS Matt~~~

Thanks Vapo...it happened back at Thanksgiving...a ring purchase is part of the reason funds were beyond very tight back then ;)

1-11-07, 6:15 pm, Batch IX has been laid! - I wasn't expecting it, but granted didn't pay much attention to the tank today ;) Pictures later!

The larval tanks got dosed with Reef Plus, Reef Iodide and Marine Max today.....

As always, each color shift represents 100 eggs, the last smaller group on the right is 39.

Matt,

I think it is about time to change your signature/tag line, I think you are way beyond raising ONE now :)

Congrats on thread of the month as well.

Brian

Thanks Brian!

Noon today, I added 1L of Fresh T-Iso. It looks like the rotifers in the tank have suddenly disappeared?! Don't know if there's been a crash or if the larval clowns have "caught up" with the rotifer population and taken it way down.

I gave Batch VIII Otohime A last night and this morning...don't know if they're eating it or not but I'm thinking *maybe* I can get them to skip BBS all together?

Due to the low rotifer population, I harvested about a gallon's worth of L-Strain rots (and inadvertently got Tiggerpods too) - they're enriching for a few hours on the kitchen sink with selcon and will be added this evening.

FWIW,

Matt

I am having a rotifer deficit, too, at the moment. I am fortunate to have a friend at the local University who does zebrafish research, and grows rotifers in a tower!

Just had a nice visit with him, too. A font of knowledge.

If you are going to skip the BBS, be sure to continue the rotifers for many more days, and make sure you have enough.

By tower I mean that he grows rotifers in a cylindar that is about 2 ft in diameter, and goes from the floor to the ceiling in height. Actually, he has two towers for rotifers. A huge container for mixing saltwater, and a system of valves to harvest rots and replenish water.
