An Inconvenient Truth comnig to our area

H.Crispa, interesting, the Mars info.
There's been some speculation among classical linguists, of all folk, that the sun may have long-term cycles.

Your settlements in Greenland were set down just before the Little Ice Age---when the Little Ice Age began, they failed and left the remnants of their buildings. This, again, may be due to a volcanic eruption, but a really big one. Can't recall which.

On the classical linguist front: there's a periodicity in European invasions. Every 500 years, give or take, the barbarians would come howling out of the steppes or wherever, and civilization would get invaded. Eventually civilization learned to fight off the invaders [we call this period the Roman Empire] and then, again, civilization went down in a period of weakness. 2000 bc, wave A indoeuropeans break into Greece; 1500 bc, minoa goes down; 1000 bc, wave b invaders enter Greece, Trojan War, etc; 500 bc, Celts invade Rome; 0, Rome invades Celts, who are wreaking havoc in the north and threatening to upset the applecart; 500 ad, Rome goes down. 1000 ad, Normans; 1500 ad, well, we're getting close to the black death and a nasty period and the Little Ice Age. 2000...the north pole melts.

What tended to happen, according to this theory, was a weather disruption, be it El Nino cycles, whatever, that result from solar instability, and both agriculture and nomadic cultures take a hit. The reason that the barbarians kept invading the south was that the grasslands were going dry, and the tougher barbarians would kick the weaker ones south, taking their land. This happened until Rome knocked heads; and then when Rome couldn't sustain its northern border against a particularly bad set of their own management and a nasty lot of horse-equipped, much higher-tech barbarians, they collapsed. They rode through the one in 0 by having the ability to ship food to areas of scarcity. But they couldn't get it organized in 500. And then we have the nice Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, who had their own cycles of boom, bust, and invasion.

It's an interesting theory. Some data bears it out. It's unrelated to the thermohaline conveyor, in the sense that the only data on it comes after the last time the conveyor collapsed, but then again, we could be the recipient of a triple-witching-hour event, in which our overuse of fossil fuels runs bang up against 500 year event...

I agree with you that the planet tends to correct itself. The middle of the path of the correction tends to be an uncomfortable place to be.

But we tend to squeak through, as a species; and I'm not a pessimist at all. What I tend to think we're courting is a Little Ice Age event, not a major one. That will challenge our inventiveness, but not be a global catastrophe. If one really big volcano goes off at this point, as they do at random, [the Europeans of the day were living under a pall of wood smoke and cutting down the forests hand over fist, plus 'charcoaling' wood for more portability, before something blew in the south Pacific in their day] we just might see interesting times ourselves. The conveyor might stutter, and then we'll run ourselves ragged trying to figure out how to fix it.

And personally, I remember the skies before smog took over, [it's not THAT long ago] and I have hopes I'll see the Milky Way in city outskirts again. I like technology: I'm first in line for new whizbangs. I just want what's coming to be more efficient than the 1920's gas engine.

Jason would you believe I posted this only to draw you out :D

Where on earth or Mars have you been these days!
We have important matters to discuss ASAP.

Sk8tr, crispa is our resident skeptic, genius, eccentric, general lunatic at large. What would happen if we did see a massive eruption or even an asteroid impact would be in simple terms the perfect geo-climatological storm. Could we counter balance the effects ? A million $$$ question IMO. I believe the earth would seek a rapid new balance in such an event and I believe humans would not in a large part be able to withstand such rapid changes. Even simple data from our "glass boxes" has shown me that there is an order to chaos and that "balance" is the great equalizer.

I agree with Jason on this one like i said its all happened before and it going to happen again we might just help it along. lol

I would like to be here the day that someone starts digging up our fossials trying to figure out what these primitive tools are that we were using and we are the new dinosours!!! :) lol

WAIT NO!!!!! I HAVE FOUND THE ANWSER WE NEED TO LOOK NO FURTHER!!!!!

There is no such thing as global warming. Chuck Norris was cold, so he turned the sun up!!!!!!

YEh I suppose you must be right I mean you said it and all, you should call up all those scientists and save them some trouble I bet they would give you prize or something. Thanks for clearing all this nonsense up, man I know I feel better now.

Hey if you get time could you turn it down really low this winter so we can have like 20 feet of snow???? It takes a state of emergency for WVU to cancial classes!

The Norse settled Greenland for 500 years before the mini ice age wiped it out. That is as long as Europeans have settled North and South America. If you want convincing of the impact of humans on the environment, Count the cars of just one train of Coal headed for the electric power plants.

There are ways of using coal with little impact on the environment BUT it costs money to build the new plants and maintain them.

As much as I cannot afford the cost of gas, I believe the only chance for this world is for gas to cost 4.00 per gallon.
I drive a car that gets 40 mpg. When I shopped for it I asked for an American made car that got 35-40 mpg. I was shown a toyota, a suzuki, and a Korean thing with an American name plate on it. I finally bought a Honda because the body was made in USA and interior Canada. My next American car will be a Toyota Corolla.
People driving 15mph houses around is insane for so many reasons. One is Class. My economy car that is inexpensive is a sitting duch for a $80,000 Hummer.

Before we are treated to a tirade about the virues of a free market. Read "The Jungle" it is about meat packing industry at the turn of the century. One of the favorite tricks was to buy cattle that had TB. The animals were swollen with water so they got more pounds of meat from the sick animals. There is a place for Government intervention when the needs of ALL the people are in danger.

*Puts on hip waders*

Didn't want to post on this thread but oh well.

More regulation and more government intervention means bigger government and more spending to fuel that bigger government. We are already in the Trillions on debt. The last thing we need to do is go farther in debt. More regulation will only cause more government positions. While that will on the good side create more jobs it will be more of a burden on the tax payer aka us and higher taxes which we all don't need.

The only way to make a change is to make the end user change. You want that $80k Hummer well fine. Your going to pay $80K for that Hummer and $100 to fill that sucker up every time you fill up. Same goes for us. You want that blue Zoo then your going to pay $100 for that polyp cause that's what it's going to cost you.

Until the consumers that want the $80K hummers are dirt poor and broke and want that 50mpg car they will never go away. It's all about educating the consumer about what they are buying.

Now, me, I'd love to see Uncle Sam give a total tax break on the purchase of a new or used hybrid vehicle. You buy it, you deduct the full purchase price in that year. That would go a long way to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

ALSO well penned IMO!
I think you both just said the same thing though :)
The sad truth is that those willing to spend big bucks on gas guzzling vehicles really don't care about spending 4$ a gallon to fill the things up. The rest of us will drive our eco friendly mobiles while those who could care less drive around in their earth destroying monsters. If a serious climate problem is found to be directly linked to such activity don't expect me to pull you out of your land rover as the snow piles up around you. Your reap what you sow IMO.

Same goes for us. You want that blue Zoo then your going to pay $100 for that polyp cause that's what it's going to cost you.

That's only true of some, my plan is to do to the blue zoas what I did to the xenia in our area. Make it affordable to everyone, not just those wealthy enough to lock one away in their system ;) Soon very soon.

The difference the "Blue Zoo" isn't poisoning my air, and burning away my flesh with UV rays.

There is no such thing as a "No Peeing area" in a swimming pool.

We have to realize we are ALL in the same pool.

BTW the Government positions are already in place. We have to speak up. One Senator wants to put a special tax on high milage cars because he said they dont pay their fare share of the taxes for road construction.

God made Adam a steward of the earth. We can warm our families on a cold day by manageing resources or by burning down the house. Both work, but one is only for the short term.

Dont sacrafice the future on the alter of today.

I am old enough to remember DDT. People debated it's effects for years before it was finally banned, then it was still manufactured in the US for overseas markets. I remember lead in gasoline. We put lead into the air we breath for decades before someone said enough is enough in the 70's. Lead is PROVEN to cause mental retardation in infants.

If this country had stayed on the course set out by Jimmy Carter concerning energy we would not be in this mess today.

Wayne

We have been on this road before.

Very well said and so True!

100% agree, we have indeed been here before. I remember sitting in class and learning about ecology and conservation as a kid etc... Apparently it did not work for my generation so our last hope is the new generation and they do seem a bit more responsible in matters of conservation at least they do until they hear the nay sayers whos mission it is to unteach that which they know. Of this I am sure, one day our children's children will either praise us for trying to make a difference or condemn us for our stupidity and making their world more difficult to manage.

Oh boy. How about "Atlas Shrugged". The environmental movement has been hijacked by the communist party and their goal is to cripple our economy, not to save the planet. Global warming is BS. Just ask the founder of Greenpeace-- who left them for this exact reason. Boy oh boy I could go on for days and perhaps I will in my "room". But for now, I still have a mess to clean up.. see my post about my being a moron etc.

Weren't a bunch of folks worried about 'global cooling' in the 70's? I wander what these doomsday neigh sayers will come up with next.
