And so my 240 begins...

Murphy's law: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Luckily for me the only problem is this cloudy water and a small leak at the bulk head from the sump. Luckily a few more rounds of Teflon took care of that!

And my sump design was horrible. I had a baffle set too close to the chamber where the pump is and the water volume before the pump was too little. Would be ok with ATO, but I run things very simple.

Ripped that baffle out.

On a side note, Momentive RTV is strong!!! Wow. Let's see how long it holds up.

The tank is 8/2/2 and the tank I got at a deal: $570 for a barely used tank. Literally barely used. The guy I bought from used it for 2-3 shows and that's it. It's a clear for life running Herbie style drain.

Return is a new Iwaki, been using my past one for 8-10 years straight. Lights are Ocean Revive T24/7 and are amazingly very nice for the price. A definite upgrade over the CBB ones I had (although I know they're not that different than the CBB ones). Luckily my outlets are controlled by GFCI at certain locations, and I haven't had an issue in our home for years.

The stand was built by my cousin who owns a sheet metal shop, so she made it exceptionally well for me.

My last set up was a standard 125, and before that I had a 180. This is my last upgrade ever because my wall and wife won't allow for it, plus we have a baby on the way! The dimensions on the 125 didn't allow for nice scaping and I needed that 2' depth again.

In my haste, I forgot to treat the plywood. I'll do some beeswax to treat the edges and where water may drip. I am also renovating my home so there is so much going on. It wasn't excitement that made me skip that step, it's being tired and trying to finish my wood tile!

Quick and dirty shot before wire clean up and stuff:

any other details on your plumbing? Do you think that one corner overflow would be sufficient? I'm planning a 240g upgrade also, but cant decide on what internal overflow to use since I need the tank against the wall (therefore no external option).

My plumbing is simple and I'll get some
Pics when I get home.

I'm just running Herbie style. The main drain is 1.5" bulkhead with a gate valve, and braided vinyl. In fact all lines are braided vinyl, it's simpler for me and I like simple. The emergency drain is a 1.25" bulk head. I think my only problem that I can correct later is the sump bulk head to the pump, it's only an inch and I think their flow rate is only 700 gph or so. But I did that to match the 1" male threaded part on the pump inlet.

In hindsight I should have done a 1.5" and reduced it down.

I had to dial down the outlet of the pump, but that's because I had a leak at first. Now I don't.

To those that know plumbing more, if I open up my Iwaki full throttle (which maxes out at 1200 gph I think) technically the bulk head can't handle that right? And the sump will start to fill up with more water correct?

Quick question: I've never tackled an upgrade like this, but all I'm re using is the rock from my 125. And live stock of course. The sand is new sand, Ocean direct "live sand", kinda damp, not fully wet.

The sand was added first and then RODI and then salt mixed in with the sand and water. Should expect to see a cycle? I added in a cup of old sand, but obviously I haven't added any of my old livestock yet. Not sure what I need to do at this point. Any suggestions?

I would assume the sand would have die off in it, and there's about 200# of it in there.

IME, yes the potential to have a cycle is there but it definitely doesn't mean that you will. The presence or severity of a cycle is going to be determined by how much bio-load the live rock taken from the established tank and added to the new tank can handle. So you will want to be mindful of feeding and unnecessary nutrients added until it builds up.
In the past I have transferred as you intend to do, using new sand, new water and live rock from the established tank and I never seen a cycle. But I was also careful to rinse and scrub the live rock in the existing tanks water prior to placing in the new tank. I was also careful to not let the rock be exposed to air for very long to avoid die-off. Lastly, I was also mindful to cut back on feeding for the first few weeks and tested more often to be sure the bacteria could keep up with the bio-load.

Thanks tom. The bio load will be the same for the first few weeks. Good to know. I've been watching ammonia with the badge, but none has shown up.

Remember you also want to feed the bacteria or it's ability to process nutrients will diminish. In other words, ghost feed until you get livestock in the tank.

Well this whole upgrade has been an ordeal I'll never want to go thru ever again.
-Corals look ****ed from being in bins, maybe browning out my sps, I dunno
-lost two leopards that I've had for months: a large established ornate that stressed itself to death and a female black leopard that jumped out of the bin and I found her damp, but obviously too late.
-leaks that occurred but have since been corrected.
-trying to multitask too much: flooring and trying to keep things alive and healthy has stressed me out like crazy, and in my haste I forget to treat the plywood.

I'm glad it's over and at this point only time can tell if all my sps and frags will survive. Ocean direct Caribbean sand took FOUR days to settle out, it helped when I put live rock and a couple cups of my old sand in, probably the bacteria colonizing and helping it out.

Geez, sometimes it's best to always remember this: if ain't broken, don't fix it.

I'm curiously watching how things will go with 3 ocean revives lighting that 240.

Me too. I ran the CBB over my 125 with no issues. Grew sps, maybe slowly, but they grew. I know people around me who use these with great results. They're better than the other CBB for sure.

I have one over my 37g cube. I was really happy with my lps dominate tank. Then a few months back I started adding SPS. I've struggle with coloration and growth has been very slow. The frags were grown under MH before I purchased them. I've got some color back now that I've been broadcast feeding Acropower and Reef Chili but not even close to what they looked like under MH.

I'm building a new, much larger tank soon. Still trying to determine how I'll light it.

And so my 240 begins...

Well it's been about a month now. I'm gonna use this thread to document growth and (hopefully) no crashes. It'll be a log for me.

Got some new acro colonies, some new fish, stable waters and so I should probably do a water change soon.

Ocean revives look great, I'm running channel 1 at 97 and ch 2 at 20% and I'm seeing growth for sure on many frags and colonies.
