Hi!

So my LFS has started this new display tank - it's about 500 gallons and he's doing an all anemone tank with tons of juvi tank raised ocellairs...

I saw this nem in there and am not sure what it is!

Anyone know? It's really cool looking... to give you and idea of size - those clowns are about 3/4 of an inch...

Thanks! Kim

OH! Ok - so tell me this... It didn't look like the pictures I've seen - but maybe you're right!

So what are they worth? Just curious... I don't know how much he's charging for it - but I really like it and was thinking about it...

Any ideas in case I want to get it?

it might be one of thows mini carpet nems they grow like 4-6 inches from what i understand but im no expert when it comes to that.

Look at this description of Malu that I found...

Original description As Discosoma malu, from specimens collected at Mer, in the Torres Straits

Diagnostic field characters Tentacles sparse, stubby (rarely to 40 mm long), of variable length even within one radial row, commonly magenta-tipped. Oral disc lies at surface of sediment in which delicate column is burrowed. Column commonly pale cream or yellow colour, may have splotches of deep yellow or orange.

Details Tentacles arise from brown or purplish (rarely bright green) oral disc as much as 200 mm in diameter that may have white radial markings; evenly tapered to point or slightly inflated in middle; lower part same colour as oral disc, but upper portion may have several white rings or green end. Column very thin in expansion; upper part violet-brown (due to zooxanthellae) with longitudinal rows of adhesive verrucae. Anemones can retract completely into sediment; most common in shallow, quiet waters.

Hmm...

Anyone else have an idea? I'm really not usually this impatient - but I'm very bored at work today! LOL!!!

yes, that is what it is..its a beaded sea anemone. Heteractis aurora. Its a really pretty one too..In all the pictures I have seen I haven't seen a purple one before.

I DO think it's really pretty! I really think I want it - but can't really find any care requirements...

Think it would be ok in a tank with a BTA? I'm thinking it'd probably stay close to the sand... don't you think?

I think it is more likely H. malu than H. aurora. With aurora the tentacles have bulges, like a string of beads. Also, aurora aren't very popular to clowns, they attract juveniles, but are not very attractive to adult clowns. They are considered a "nursery" host anemone for this reason.

Heteractis Malu from the markings on the underside! Do you have any other pics?

No... but how do you know - I can't see the underside in those pics!
