Anemone Lighting

the thing that scares me right away is the LED's are only 1 watt a piece. that is a sign to me that the fixture is not really that strong... if you look at most diy kits out there now all LED's are 3 watts.

imo i would say no if it is your only source of light

my .02$

+1

Are MH required when keeping Carpets or will a T5 fixture due?

I currently am keeping one under LEDs, your question really need more detail though because there is a very wide range of T5's and halides, some of which will work and some of which will not.

how about something like this:?

http://cgi.ebay.com/120W-Aquarium-C...803675&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=8917422149422910465

This runs 2w LEDs.. and I think most 3 watt LEDS actually run closer to 2watts..

what size tank? For $300 im sure you could build a DIY LED fixture that would work.

The size of the tank is not realy important as I dont need to light up the whole tank.. But that tank is about 18'' deep.

And Ive though about a DIY fixture but I do not have the time or knowledge for a project like that.

I won't take any auction that originates in China. Especially the "you order, you pay, we build" ones. And let's not forget the $98 shipping either.

Just too many ways for that auction to go horribly wrong and I don't care how good their feedback is. There are others out there that are at least shipped from the U.S.

I am very interest in the "others out there" I am looking for a high powered LED that is under $200.. I realize that this is a tall order and may not be possible.. There are tons of Chinease made and japanese used LEDS that are lighting up the reefs of our asian counterparts... i dont see why these cheap LEDS wouldnt work here.

Honestly, im a firm believer of you get what your pay for. So if 200 is your budget, id prob look at some decent used 250 mh pendant or something or a nice t5' set up...i just wouldnt feel comfortable spending all that money on the nem to watch it wither due to a poor ebay product

I agree with that completely.. I am just trying to find my most affordable LED option for lights. Anyone with suggestions?

Well I am not totally against it, i just dont know that with the time and effort its my best option. Where would you suggest what would the cost look like?

I mean people are lighting up SPS reefs with good success with those PAR 38 bulbs.. SO presumably I could get 3 of those and have more than enough light to spot light any anemone..? and that would be less than $300..

Rapid LED has 24 LED kits (non dimming drivers) for $200 and $185 and you might be able to do better than that buy the components elsewhere too. Those kits don't include a heatsink but you should be able to put together a pretty serious "spotlight" for under $250. You might even be able to get away with a few less LEDs if necessary.

Do you have any experience with these DIY LED kits? I dont even know how to sauder anything.. Are the kits a good idea for non DIYers like me?

Anyway.. I will be putting a gig under whatever light I end up getting so should be a cool experiment.. (if it starts to do poorly or fade, well dont worry, I can always put up the MH ive got.)
