BTA like to have their foot in a shaded and low-flow area, the cup is an attempt to provide this to keep them from walking around.
In response to your other thread, BTA sticking to the glass is no real issue point a powerhead at the foot and it will let go rather quickly. Or you can slowly scrape the foot if you are comfortable doing so.
