My LTA ate my flame angel about a month ago....pretty disappointing too, since it was the prettiest (but not most impressive) occupant. As far as the flashlight, I've found that a red lens seems less intrusive; the copepods and other nocturnal occupants seem less effected by it. I'm in the process of moving my 55g to a 180g, I have a sebae that's recovered since I acquired it from a tank that was failing miserably, the sebae isn't really my anemone of choice, and it's sharing space with the LTA...if you want I'd give it to you knowing it's going to a someone who gives a damn.
You may not need to change your substrate. Just give it some time to see if the nitrates go down. I've heard of having fine sand and larger grade pieces together. I suggest you do some research on RC and also on WetWebMedia on sand beds. I believe Anthony Calfo has an article on WWM about the subject.
lol. Isn't that the truth. It seems everyone has a different opinion. For a DSB to work, there has to be an an anaerobic zone where enough nitrobacillus can do their thing and convert the nitrate to gaseous nitrogen. This same process occurs in the deep parts of live rock.

my carpet was a black hole and ate everything in my tank...almost.
It ate a pearly jawfish, 3 chromis, 1 purple long spine urchin, several hermit crabs and snails, and my male allardi!!!!!
I wish I had a picture of it eatin gthe clown as I thought it would never happen and noone really ever believes me. And yes, he was being hosted with a female allardi.
