Anemone splitting

Hey Reefers,

So I've never seen an anemone split before. I left for work this morning and he was happy and spread wide open.

I came home to this.

Thanks for sharing Cap, I'm a lurker and have never seen that :-)

My pleasure. I never had before either.

It's a good thing I read quite a bit about anemones and knew they split because I think I would have had a heart attack had I not know.

OP, hasn't your tank only been up and running for a couple or three months? If so, I think it is awesome you have been able to keep anemone already plus it split! Way to go.

Yes, it's only been up for 7-8 weeks. :)

Stability and husbandry are key from everything that I read. Therefore not very difficult in my opinion if your organized.

I am happy that it's going well, not to say that things might not be so smooth in the future. A lot of it has been all the great info and people here that provide support.

Did you just add the it? It seems like the stress of moving causes them causes to split, survival mechanism most likely. My bubble tip split a few days after adding it to my tank as well.

BTA's will also split after a big water change, if you feed them a big meal. Stress seems to be a trigger. It all depends on the particular anemone. I have one rainbow BTA that I can make split easily, but the clones for some reason don't.

+1

Caps, stability is the key to a healthy tank, but too often stress is the cause of a nem splitting. Just like plants that are stressed tend to flower. It's the way they try to keep the species alive. Congrats on seeing the split, but at just 8 weeks your tank isn't close to being mature yet. Just keep up the good work and you'll get there soon enough and with a good healthy tank.

He has been in my tank for 6 weeks, so no I didn't just add him. He had been in the same spot since day 2 and fully opened everyday. I feed my tank twice a day and him 2-3 times a week.

Water change was done last weekend and I only do 10% changes so nothing major.

When I left for work yesterday he was fully open in his normal spot so I don see any reason for him to be stressed. However I did spot feed him the night before.

BTA's don't need to be fed everyday. Once or twice a week is plenty unless you want them to split and the ones that don't can grow HUGE. As long as you have good quality light they don't need to be fed at all, if they're healthy!

Yes, He only get spot fed 2-3 times a week. My fish get fed twice a day, so he might grab some here and there. He was getting pretty big, 6" across fully open not including his tentacles. I got him he may maybe 3" so I am happy that he is happy.

I will cut down on his feedings though as I don't want a tank full of anemones.

Anemone splitting and clown fish viteting the inside of the anemoni is this normal?

Ummmmm I would not be happy about it splitting. It's a sign that he is overly stressed. Big mistake adding a nem in a new tank. The minimum time frame is at least six months before adding one. Keep a close eye on him, I'll put money on him not making it very long.
