anemone tank

im thinking of setting up an anemone tank. an oceanic 30 gal. with a closed loop for serious water movement and this will be connect to a system with a 150 gallon sump. i have a ritterie anemone that i've had for about a year in a 210 gallon. in the new set up in thinking of putting a 400 watt MH on it. the anemone will be the only thing in the tank except for a couple saddle back OR there will be about 10 or so false percs. would this set up work? or would it work but not be ideal for ANY anemone? asking the experts...thanks...

A 30 gallon would be too small for a ritteri imo. There are a couple people here that have had them get 30'' in diameter.

I would keep it in the 210 instead of move it.

Also I wouldn't do 10 percs in a 30 gallon... You could probably get away with 4 until they become mature.

What are the dimensions of the 30 gallon?

thanks lance. the tank is about 20x20x20. i would obviously move the anemone if i see it outgrowing the tank after some time. 10 percs was just an idea but ya 4 sounds a little more realistic. do you think IF i did this, a 400 MH would be sufficuent for the ritteri?

Even having 4 False Percs may become a problem as they mature and pair off. In that small of a tank fighting to the death could result.

Clowns should never be kept in more than pairs in anything other than a Large system. Even then there are risks.

I admit that False Percs have the best chance of any at getting along in a group setting but there is still the risk. Each fish is different.

I think a 250 watt MH would be plenty, since the anemone will likely be on top of a rock pile. 400 watts seems like overkill and even with a chiller, temperature could be a problem.

the only reason i was thinking 400 was b/c i have heard that a ritteri, if given the opportunity would move directly under a 1000watt if given the chance. the main point of this tank would be the anemone not the fish. also would the 400 hurt the ritteri?

What lighting do you have the ritteri under currently? ~How deep is the ritteri from the surface of the water and ~how far from the surface of the water is the light?

How is the ritteri doing right now?

I plan on doing the same with a single mag in a 60 gallon cube.
The tank is maturing at the moment, it is 4 months old and has a thriving red and green bta in it. this is a shot from 3 months ago.

I have a 400watt 14k mh and 55wats actinic.
I also have a chiller

The btas have tripled in size in two months.

My magnifica's and BTAs never got along well. If the mags were happy the BTAs were upset and vice versa.

IME, pull the BTAs out months before adding the mag.

Thanks traveller, thats the plan I will pull the btas and maybe trabe them or put them in another tank.

I have read alot of the threads here conscerning the mags by the likes of ron popeil, flighty delphinius etc and the advice that they give on acclimation and placement is great.

The mags here are not suffering from shipping stress but are held in storage in poor conitions so I will aim to get one that has just arrived and check for all the relevant things foot, mouth bleaching etc. Thaey are very cheap as well $5 US.

lance..currently the mag is at the very top of my water surface and he is under 250 12 k coralvue's. the lights are about 9 inches from the surface...

Then if it's doing good, I would mirror the new tank to what it is under currently. 250watts 12000k 9 inchs from the surface.
