Anemones - Known and Unknowns

Hi all,

I was wondering if anything has changed in the last 10 years in anemone keeping. At one time the only information was guess-timation........good lighting, feed them clam/shrimp once in a while - the rest was just luck.

Question - Are there new "knowns" to successful anemone keeping? Or is it a matter of by-gosh-and-by-golly guessing?

Thanks for reading....

There are lots of "knowns" but it changes from species to species. It is "known" that there is a certain set of anemones that will host clowns. It is "known" which ones need the most light or flow vs those that are more hardy. It is "known" what each specific type wants as far as sand vs rock, high flow vs moderate flow vs no flow, and high vs moderate light. There are TONS of "knowns" now a days.

Thanks for the reponse. I should have been a little more specific in my questions , you're right...

I'm glad to hear that the hobby is solving new problems all the time - part of what makes the hobby so much fun. It's one of the few pioneering things left :)

I wasn't trying be offensive. Those are some of the categories in which established facts exist. There are still many areas where guesswork is used. Like how to get a bubbletip anemone to bubble it's tips.

If you have questions regarding one of the categories I mentioned earlier, there are several people on this forum who can answer them for you. But to answer your original question in full, I would have to write a book! :)
