anenome problems!

i have a gtba. about two months ago i went from pc lighting to a mh/pc fixture. ever since my bta has acted really wierd. first it kept blowing around or floating(tried the cup thing). now it just shrivels to nothing during the day then at night kinda swells up. i thought i lost it but when i looked for it it was behing all of my rock work in virtually no light. what should i do. my water is ok except for nitrates between.3 and.5ppm. getting ready to check again tonight. i also have a aquac skimmer coming that will be here this weekend so that will help. calcium is high as well( last checked around 580. i was using oceanic salt but not anymore. do water changes often. just need some input on the bta please

For some reason they like to go back behind the liverock. Mine did that same thing and everytime I would move it back out front it would go straight back behind the rock where it wanted to be. Thats nothing to be concerned about. They will reach out and get the light that they need. I waited for my BTA to find a place for its foot and then I moved the whole rock to where I wanted it.
Just a thought.

Light is to bright. Did u acclimate it?

while this can be a problem, nems will / can acclimate themselves by moving to a shaded area. my GBTA's live perfectly happy under 400W MH's, which in reality don't even compare to the sun.

i would look at your params a little closer, all of them ( maybe post your newly tested numbers and brand of test kit ). what are you feeding and when??

oh and my lighting is only 3x175mh and two 96w pc. i've only had this fix for about two months now since my upgrade from 90g to 125g. i've had the bta for more tham 7 months now but it was originally under coralife pc 4x96 pc's

Yea, i agree that it can acclimate itself, but itll be less stressful to acclimate it slowly than just throwing it in there with bright light. Its just like someone turning on ur light when ur sleeping :)

Like a4twenty said it can acclimate itself to the lighting but if you don't take measures to acclimate it to the lighting (reduced photoperiod and/or screens to diffuse light) then you risk bleaching the anemone.

the anemone floating around the tank can be a sign of problems if it is for an extended period of time. they may let go to move from a spot they don't like but it is far more common for them the "walk" where they want to go.

the params you posted look ok, is the C a problem with that brand of salt? or are you dosing something to maintain C and Alk?

what and how often were you feeding him?

if possible could you post a pic?

i feed thebta raw shrimp. i just started doing this about a month ago. before i never really fed him. i just tried again the other day. should i do something diiferent? i don't suppliment anything i was just using oceanic salt that tends to be high in calcium. i now use io. i heard that you can mix the two to make a great salt.

I have 400w MH lights, had one GBTA when making the switch from PC and it loved it from the moment the lights went on. The BTA used to be brown with no real nice colors and has been changing to a nice green coloration and sits only about 8" under the surface (it moved there)

Bought a RBTA and placed it more than a foot under water on a rock, it immediately moved to the underside of the rock where it "lives" occasionally sticking its head/tenticles out into the light. I am not sure if its the amount of light or water flow in that area that it did not like but keep meaning to check the strength of the light in the tank it was in at the LFS.

So, two BTA's in the same system with the same lighting (Both are under different 400w fixtures at different ends of the tanks) with different responses.

it sounds like you were not feeding enough but without a photo it is hard to say what is wrong, how is he today? , attached ?

i tried to feed it yesterday and i don't really think it worked out to well. still the same situation. do you guys/girls think if i treid to feed at night i will have better results

I usually feed during the day. A healthy anemone will be sticky so you can just touch the food to a tentacle and it will take it from you and eat it rather quickly. My newest bta would think something was attacking it when I tried to feed it for the first week, but I guess it got use to it and finally started eating. Now it takes it from me and swallows it.
