anenomes and uv filtration

Just wantedd to reach out to everyone here and get some feedback.

In the past I have never had any luck keeping anenomes of any type. They typically would wither away and die. I was and have always run big UV filtration for various reasons. This is the only thing that I could contribute was that I was killing everything in the water column.

Fast forward to now. I have 65g cube that has no UV and I have 4 green and rose bubble tip anenomes that are out growing the tank. The feeding and water qualities are identical to mybig system. These guys are healthy and look wonderful. The clowns have started to host them and all is good.

This tank will go away and the livestock moved to my 330g once its ready. I do have a big UV filter on it but a little concerned moving forward.

How many of you are running UV filters and having luck or no problems with your livestock? I am just wondering if I am correct in my thought process.

Any input would be absolutely wonderful as I am trying to set myself up for success with this new build.

Thanks in advance

Personally, I don't consider UV to be very effective; if the flow is low enough to provide adequate exposure, you're not going to get much- good or bad- pulled into it.

That said, I know of several that run UV with no effect on livestock, and I don't really see how it could. There are, however, a lot of other variables that you didn't mention- lighting, flow, how much and how often you were feeding them, etc.

On the current 65g. I feed every other night frozen krill, frozen veggie and frozen brine. Very occasionally I will hand feed them freeze dried brine shrimp. Sometime they get pellets.

I also about once a month does Kent Marine Microvert.

Water perm: Temp 78-79 ORP 341 PH 8.14 SAL. 1.028- 030 mag. are norm in the 450 range and I dont test for alk

This is a temp system so I have a HOB Reef Octo Skimmer. HOB filter. Run carbon media reactor about 24 hours a week. Also has a small ehiem canister

Water changes about 10% every 2-3 weeks. I am running NO UV

It has an 8 tube T5 array along with a few koralis for plenty of flow.

They started out small and now are huge and outgrowing the tank.

The 415g system. that i had some years ago was close to the same water perm. with MH lighting.

The 250g(210 main display) system currently up and running for almost 3 years now has had VHO, MH and now has a t5 lighting array. It has lots of flow with closed loop in and vortech MP40's to supplement. Closed loop is on every hour on the hour for 15m. Vortechs on random mode.

In all of these systems. I have had other coral fish inverts and livestock that has flourished. Just have had terrible luck with anemones and am trying to isolate what my failure is so that it doesnt keep happening.

sorry all this info is so scattered and random. Been up 28hrs now and bed is calling me(But I am staying up because Brown truck guy is bringing me appliances and gear for the 330g rig).

thanks again

Bill, what part of MD. I lived in Frederick some years ago for a brief episode in my life.

The only issue I see is that your SG is a little high, although you stated you are currently keeping nems with no problem. What species were you having problems with? Except for the Condy, most are more difficult than the BTAs.

BTW, I'm in the military village of Bainbridge in Cecil Co.
