Angela's clam tank build thread

it looks very nice, but i thought some clams liked sand and others liked rock. and that different species have different lighting needs (in which case some would be best higher up?)

Trus. The reason for the starboard was that they seemed to have no problem attaching in it in the 265. The sand is thin enough that they can still attach directly to the glass if they want. If I see that they aren't doing well or ending up on their side all the time I will add some rocks for them. Maybe some small pieces of tonga shelf or something similar.

As far as lighting needs, some REQUIRE more light than others and I definately have plenty for even the most demanding. I dont think the derasa or gigas mind the intense lighting though. They just do not REQUIRE it as the maximas and croceas do.

I could be wrong, but thats my understanding.

I had a zero edge and wasnt that nuts about it. It evaporated a ton and keeping the temp stable was impossible. Granted it wasnt plumbed in to the 265. Also since the return was directly in the center of the tank it was difficult to keep the surface smooth enough to see clearly and provide enough flow. They are cool tanks though.

Look what I found! Wasnt really looking for any more maximas, but...they kind of found me.

And since I was there and had to pay shipping anyway...

Question:

Do you guys think the little maxis would be happier if I put in some rocks for them to attach to? I don't want them to be unhappy or not do well d/t the sand. They are opened up and haven't moved/fell over, but I just know small maximas can be a challenge anyway and want them to be in an optimal environment.

Man those were some beauties, you beat me to them though. I found the site. Great prices too. I almost had to snap my 4 week streak of not buying any clams.:D

If you look at ezcompany's lighting sticky there is a picture of some crocea's and they are all clumped up on a rock. I think if you could get the maxi's to do that they would be a little happyer and it would look cool.

New pics. Man this tank is really kicking my butt...Detritus City is my new name for it. If my 265 was this much work I would have thrown in the towel a long time ago (not really...but just whining). The sand has proven to be just as much a disaster as the starboard! I have got to get a filter bag for the pump. Funny thing is I dont even have much detritus in the sump of the 265. I run filter socks on everything with water coming out of it. I dont know where this stuff is coming from.

ANYWAY...new pics...it's nice and clean for the moment and looks beautiful...me on the other hand...I'm waterlogged and cold...

I just love this clam...he is such a pretty bright blue. The guy next to him isn't half bad either :)

Wow, those clams look happy. You weren't kidding that they opened right up. I expect the colors will continue to improve in your tank.

I think the residents of "detritus" city are a good looking bunch.

Great photo skills to!

Thanks for the nice words regarding Detritus City. It has it's moments.

As for the clams, they never missed a beat! Came straight out of the bags looking all pretty.

I was just thinking that your pics of the clams are much better than mine...so great photo skills to you too!

Thanks for the beautiful clams and I look forward to more in the future (hint hint)

Angela

Well it's clean for the pictures...it gets pretty dirty trust me...

Great looking tank, I am currently setting up my clam tank too and I hope it turns out as nice as yours did.

I have been taking pic's so watch for my upcoming build thread.

Just curious, in the top left of the first pic just below the derasa on the sand along the glass, there is something that looks purple and red, what is it? I can't tell but it looks like an acan to me.
