Hi all

I was wondering out of the potters and flame angelfish which is the most unlikly to eat lps and sps. ( the fish would be for a 50 gallon tankthat has been set up for a year and a half)

I never kept an potter before but there are three flames in my FOWLR tank, they like to eat euphyllias,montiporas,gonioporas, and zoanthids that I provide. I think that potters are similar to flames.

Really this is hit or miss. Any dwarf angel may nip corals.
So far after 4 months my Potters is leaving my Candy Cane and Torch alone. Keeping fingers crossed!:thumbsup:

It is rolling the dice. You may win, but the odds are not in favor of either not nipping LPS. The smaller the tank (less available food to graze on), the greater the odds of them not being LPS safe.

An option is to keep your angel in a quarantine tank for a few months and get him to only eat prepared foods. In other words he gets lazy and instead of grazing all day long he swims around because you have got him fat on frozen foods. Our Flame is going on 10 years since we have had him and he is perfect with both clams and LPS including brains.

I have had both over the years, and IME the Potter's was more safe -- though would still nip from time to time. However, I would never trust any dwarf angel with fleshy LPS.

thanks for the info everyone reef central has been very helpful to me i guess that means no dwarf for me because i do likemy corals

Any fleshy coral may be too tempting to either species. They are moderate risk, each one. That is about 50-50. If your corals are exceptionally healthy it might be a little bit less. But the risk is never going to be zero. And that goes for most fish we keep, sadly.
Safest SW Angels: In Centropyge, C. argi and its relatives. White-tailed and Fisher's also. These are also smaller than the others, meaning lees damage if/when they start nipping. Genicanthus angels are the safest angels, but the risk is still NOT zero, contrary to popular belief.
There are things you can do to reduce the risk, but the biggest one is to match the fish with stuff they won't touch. This leaves most fleshy LPS out. Zoas are also angel fodder..

I have 4 angels in my 180 LPS / leather / anemone tank, a majestic, a potters, a flame, and a coral beauty. Of all those the only one I have seen nip so far is the coral beauty on some kenya trees. To me it was well worth the risk because I personally like colorful, personable fish over corals and most of my corals sting hard or are noxious softies (less likely to be eaten).

i have both a flame and cb in a sps, lps reef with clams. so far in 2 years, no issue.

I have a Potters in my 110 mixed reef along with a large frogspawn and hammer without issues. You may get lucky and add a specimen that wont pick at your existing corals but watch it carefully with any corals you add after it. I have a regal that i've raised from a baby. He doesnt pick at any lps that were in the tank before he was, but he does sample (and usually pick to death) any new ones that I add. Good luck.

So far my Flameback and Bicolor are too busy trying to decide who is the boss to bother my most recent coral addition, a blue Goniastrea. They look at it, and swim away. Phew! LOL
My only regret is I cannot spend 2-3 hundred getting an Aussie Scoly for the new tank, now. oh well..everything is a trade-off in our hobby!
