Angels and Butterflies in my SPS Tank

My zoas and clam didn't survive the nipping, but the majority of my SPS did! I just need to be good with keeping my tank healthy. I tend to overstock, so it's not very forgiving when it comes to skipping water changes. If I get lazy (e.g., have my Ca reactor offline for too long), my sensitive SPS corals will show signs of stress and the angels + my tinkeri hybrid will go to town on them. The hardier SPS (digitatas, birdsnests, stylos) are unphased. My acroporas will exhibit slower growth with all the nipping, but I can live with that. Started the hobby as a coral junkie. More and more now, I enjoy the fish!

My stock list includes:
Angels:
1) Multibar Angel - wouldn't eat prepared foods for the first 3 months in my tank. Would just nip on my rocks. Now will eat mysis, brine, and capellin roe.
2) Regal Angel - Had him for 12 months now. Prefers pellets over frozen. Silly guy.
3) Venustus Angel - Can't see it in this photo, but it does swim out confidently. Would only pick at the rocks the first month, but now loves eating frozen, especially the roe. He was barely an inch when I got him. Has grown about .25" in the past 2 months in my tank.
4) 3 Bellus Angels - my favorite of the genicanthus angels. Slow growers. I've had them in my tank for about 1.5 years now, and they have gotten so fat that they look like swimming golf balls, but they have only grown maybe about 1/2" in length. Completely reef safe in my tank. Not in the photo (guess I should have posted a FTS, rather than a left side only shot).

Butterflies:
1) Tinkeri Hybrid - I picked up this guy from PIA. Came in really thin, but bulked up really fast. Eats like a pig - also likes picking at my corals unfortunately.
2) Full Tinkeri - Also from PIA. Didn't know how to eat from the water column for the first 2 months in my tank (I broadcast feed with pumps on for my anthias). Lost a bit of weight, but gained it back once it figured how to eat from the water column. Picks at corals, but not as fervently as the hybrid.

Interesting enough, my LPS (war coral, and a handful of chalices) are pretty much left alone.

very nice.... definitely get that tinkeri fatter!! Is that a devils hand or an anemone right of center? Great tank!

beautiful tank and great info! kudos!
Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, the tinkeri will need to beef it up a bit. He's playing catch up for the initial weight loss he suffered, but he's steadily gaining weight now.

That's a neon toadstool in the middle. Had this sucker for about 5 years now. Made tons of babies all over my tank that I've been giving away to locals. I have two anemones in the back that my clowns ignore. They prefer to host in the toadstool instead. Silly clowns.

Have been contemplating picking up a scribbled angel juvenile, but I know I am already pushing it with my livestock as is, and I bet a juvenile scribbled will just add enough aggression in my tank to throw the balance off and create chaos.

I have a 240g that I can upgrade to, but that's just A LOT of work to make that move and fear livestock losses in the process.

Here's a crappy video of my fish waiting for a feeding:

looks amazing! always wondered how would they fair with clams- thanks for answering that question before I make a stupid move.

That is stunning! Love the multibar! And wow that's a lot of anthias, they add so much color to the tank, looks great.

How many anthias do you have? And I may have asked you this before, but what size tank?

Thank you! The regal was the main culprit for my clams' demise. Clams take too much space in the tank anyways. Here's how big the clams were before I started stocking angels and butterflies:

The large squamosa ended up shading a lot of corals and I had to eventually banish it to the corner of my tank.
Notice how I used to have zoas in my tank too. :sad2:

Thank you! I love the multibar too. Always moving around the tank looking for stuff on the rocks to eat. The multibar and the baby venustus have quickly become my tank favorites.

I'm guessing I have about 25 or so anthias? It's hard to count. I'll buy about 6 at a time. There will always be 1 or 2 in each group that will dive in the rocks upon first introduction and never come out. I figure if I keep my attrition rate on the anthias under 20%, I'll be happy.

My tank is a 140g (60"x30"x18").

How long before zoas get eaten? Do they need to be adult angels? I have Juv. blueface for about 3 months that doesn't seem interested. Don,t really mind if he eats them just curious if they will eventually develop a taste for them.
I also have a ton of sps, and the nipping seems harmless.
