Annularis Angelfish in a Reef

The first one that came died soon in my LFS, and now I'm just waiting for the new one to arrive.

.

Interesting. I tried two recently, both died quickly, the same way. Wonder if there was a "bad batch" floating around?

How is the fish doing?

He is doing well. I have the clams and best zoas and a couple other thing in protective custody! LOL ImageUploadedByTapatalk1364601529.271687.jpg

Some people don't like them but I think they are prettier than the emperor or blueface...one of my favorites for sure.

Yeah you don't hear much about Blue Rings on the boards...I guess they are not the most popular but I've always really liked them; one of my favorite angels.

I have a Majestic and Blueline without any picking...yet. There is a 50/50 shot with large angels and like everyone said already, if it comes down to it, you might have to pick one or the other. I like my angels too much so some picking will be ok with me.

Those reports didn't sound very 50/50.

Nice looking fish. Hope everything works out. I'm sure he will nip at some corals but thats the risk you run with large angels.

I just read that article. In the wild this makes sense, but in my experience, I've had several Regals, Queens, Emperor, Majestic, Blue Line. They all eventually pick and acquire a taste for softer corals... But I had to learn that for myself as many others here have done... I'm sure there have been a few that have had success with bigger Angels, but just know the risk before. Is a 200 angel worth 3000 worth of corals?

Forgot to mention The Blue Face was the worst. He ate my Zoos, picked them all of within 2-3 days of intro....

Only you can answer that...

Here is some data I found in an excel worksheet someone collected.

I have a degree in Biology and know this is not scientific data but "I want to believe" that more have success than we realize. I know that those words are blasphemy in the scientific community so don't tell anyone I said it! LOL

Been through this before.... You have to ask yourself this question. Is a $100 to $150 fish worth putting in danger a few thousand dollars worth of coral.

I can tell you through experience, the only angel that will not nip at your LPS and Softies are SwallowTails, and similar genicanthus angels....

Regals, Majesties, Blue Lines Ect Ect will eventually taste, nip or destroy your reef.
I have had all of the above and had to learn the hard way....With my setups they slowly over time would destroy my corals... Wouldn't be any one coral.... One day the regal would nip at a clam, other days Open brains, other days Lobos, Pluck Zoos....

People that post on this forum that say they have such angels I truly believe they are looking at small windows of time with minimal damage... Ask them 2 years of time with Angels and I guarantee you they have FOWL tanks.... Period... Maybe SPS tanks can sustain them.... But not LPS or Less...

It's really funny. Saying keeping a fish well fed means you need to over feed your tank to keep this fish happy. If You claim to have angels with SPS... SPS need pristine water quality... Why over feed an Angel at the expense of your SPS... I suppose if you plan on doing 4 water per month and have a super skimmer you could counter act it??? That has also led me to have awful water over the years... Over feed a fish, get bad water, and then corals die from bad water parameters... (Another issue all together).

Look at the pic of my Avatar... One of my favorite fish I ever owned... Red Sea yellow belly... He womped my reef over time.....

I say this with tons of respect...
And I say this to you. You probably truly want these fish and your mind is made up. You probably need to try, learn, and have the same experiences we all have had with Angels...

I had an Annularis Angel the size of a basketball . He would rip any polyps off the rock . Ate them like chocolate morsels it was nuts..

Ive had a Majestic angel for over 7 years with softies, a few hammers, a clam and a bunch of buttons and mushrooms. He picks at the buttons and thats it. They are all still there and have never been ripped to shreds. Had an Emperor for over 2 years and the same with him. Do what ya need to do to make yourself grin everytime you look at the tank. I got so tired of people saying dont put this in or that heck its your tank. Make it yours. Yes its risky. I built mine around what I knew I have a bit more luck with. Do I have SPS and all the hard to keep corals with a ton a fish in the tank, No. But does my tank make me happy, you bet I put in what Ive planned to do. Get advice from your friends here on the board then do what you want with no regrets! I remember when people told me not to put a flame in my reef....geez. Remember REEF is a BIG word.
As far as water quality my tank is pretty loaded. I dose vinegar and keep my levels pretty close to 0 as far as Nit and phos and my corals are wanting to burst to the surface and I feed pretty heavy once a day. I plan on adding another Emperor soon and a blueline when I can find one for a deal:-) So good luck with the angel I would also like to know how your annularis does cause Ill put one of them in too :-)
