Another 225 Tank Project!

looking good :)
just wondering where ur water line will be at & how much water will go in to the sump in case of power going out?
looking at ur orinal drawing i thought the center was going to be the return?
with a 40 gallon surge & no cuts on over flows have u thought
about micro bubbles
i cant wait to see it set up im very interested in the surge i was thinking of doing the same thing.

lol - I have thought about micro bubbles, and decided I dont like them :)

this is my first surge - I setting the whole thing up in the garage first to iron out any of those issues like bubbles and sound that I encounter - :) Basically get all the water dynamics completely dialed in before the intall of the house.

Some of it will just have to be trial an error! That is the fun part! I will share them on this thread.

I will calc out the water line once the tank arrives! I will make sure that there is enough incase of a power outage....additionally you can see I have installed a drain in the stand for mishaps! :)

Looks a bit like my stand

Looks a bit like my stand

Your stand looks a bit like mine. (see website). Except yours is almost twice as big!

I have my ballast on the top shelf to the right of the tank. My kalk resevoir is below that. Are you sure your surge can't leak onto your ballasts?

Good work on the stand.

I like you stand! ;)

I will be buliding the surge tank, and am going to run a bead of silicone around all of the joints to be extra sure it dosent leak, anddionally, most of the electrical wires will be ran through pvc to achieve a very clean look as well as protection against any disaster! Do it once, do it right!

Ok, sounds good.

Ok, sounds good.

It's the only thing that didn't seem bullet proof to me. Using the PVC as conduit is a good idea. Hopefully the ballast won't be positioned to get hit with water in case of a catastrophic failure of the surge.

I'd be interested to see how you're doing a surge when you get that done.

Keep posting the pics. You might want to do a website.

bluechunks eh?

bluechunks eh?

Blue chunks? I don't think I shoud ask.

You need to change the pics on your website. The thumbnails should be jpg photos of less than 10k each. Your website takes a long time to load and I have a 1.5 mb per second connection.

Looks good though.

I Know - just being lazy updating the page. I will correct the thumb nails.

Im using JPG, it is slow because it is hosted on a slow upload connection.

Wow!! That is a gorgeous setup!! I can not wait to see it done!! You really thought it through, to the end!! I'm loving it!!! That is one of the nicest designs I've seen ina while, you sohuld be proud!

Thanks! :D

I made little progress today, I finished insulating and shearing the inside stand, and cabinet, plus I installed the last of the framing hardware into the stand.

Here is a test fit of the 180 sump...

Boy, That 180 inside the stand really gives you a perspective of how big the stand is! sweet!

That looks amazing. I was thinking of doing something to that extent in a few years or so and now you have me dreaming and wanting it more. lol.
Good luck with it and post all the pics as you go along.

UPDATE

UPDATE

11/28/03 - SUMP MOD: The sump is almost complete, I drilled out the side for the 1.5" bulkheads, drilled out the top for the 2" returns, and cut a larger opening to make room for the skimmers.

<img src=http://bluechunks.net/reef/225reef/sumpc3.jpg>

....here you can see that the sump is almost complete and has been filled with water for the test! I still need to drill a couple more holes for the skimmer pump, and the auto top off floats switches

That looks great! One thought - I'd be concerned that with the skimmer effluent and return dumping in right before the pump intakes, you'd return a decent amount of microbubbles into the tank / surge tank. Have you considered anything to mimimize that ?
