Another camera suggestion for a newbie

Well I am looking at getting a good DLSR starter. I have about 600 to drop on a camera can probably go as high as 700 for now.

I mastered the settings on my cybershot and mastered the settings on my Dads fuji700 so I have the basics and am a fast learner. Would a Canon XT kit be a good one to start with? Also is this basic enough where my wife can use it easily? Are there any other cameras that anyone would suggest?

Thanks

The new(not so new anymore) Nikon D40 would be an awesome camera to get. I have the D50(which is older) and I love it, and it's very easy to use.

The Canon Rebel Xt would be a great camera that does fall within your budget. Yes, when set on Auto, it's very simple to use. If you decide to go with Nikon, I'd suggest skipping the D40 and trying to find a used D50. The D50 is a little older but a much better camera.

Try this link, it has more information than you can absorb in months, but there are many camera reviews and forums to ask questions. Unless you plan on using many different lenses the D40 would be a great starter camera. The only drawback is that there are only a few lenses that will auto focus with it.
