Another Canadian Reef! 600 gallon Penninsula!

I ment I would buy 2 sheets of plywood and make the seam in the middle.

As you said. The foam doesn't matter

Ya I may do that with the wood. That way the wood is supported on all 4 sides. Plus I can use the extra wood to make the stands for my sump system.

I was able to find a building material place that has 4' x 10' sheets of Plywood so you can do it without a seem. Tank is going to be nice and I like the height as well. Good luck with your build, I will be keeping an eye on as well.

Thanks for joining pciscott. Ya I asked at home depot and also a place called Rona. Neither had 8 x 10 sheets.

amazing so far ! looking forward :)

would love to see some pics of your beautiful tang collection too, from what I recall you had some of the nicest tangs.

Another nice looking build out of Canada. Jumping onboard and looking forward to seeing this one progress. A great looking start and solid looking plans. This is gonna be a good one.

So dahenley's comment got me thinking. The span between the cross bar and the end bar is over 4 feet. My worry would be a sag of the glass in the middle of the unsupported area. The 1/2 inch plywood is pretty flimsy and the weight of water may be enough to bend the glass foam and wood. I decided to have a couple pieces of 3/4 inch maple cut to meet exactly in the middle over the crossbar. Just to over-kill it we'll put the 1/2 inch on top. That will make me feel better.

Welcome Allmost. I'll post some pics of my tangs shortly. I have them set up in holding tanks in my garage.

Welcome to the thread msr224

Congrats on having the stand on site :)

Thanks jpsika08.

a lot of acrylic users use 3/4 ply under the tank, so its good. and i like the extra 1/2 on top and staggered so there is even more strength! looks good!

are you going to glue them together?

Nice looking stand, I have a steel stand in my basement (used) that needs a bunch of TLC.

Out of curiosity, is there any reason you didn't bring the tank all the way to the second wall. The pictures look like you have a really open concept going, so you could walk to the "piano room" through the dining room. Maybe its just the pictures but doesn't look like much room to walk by as it is.

I thought about glueing them, but the weight of the tank should hold them together nicely.

I considered extending it that far, but I though it would look funny against that little wall and post. Plus there the house thermostat and a light switch that would have to be moved. Also underneath in the basement I would not be able to support it properly as it would extend beyond the unfinished room where the supports are going. Leaving it short also allows me to walk around the penninsula and also view it downt the long axis.

Just a tip. you can spray some contact cement or use double sided tape to hold the two together. also, use it on the Foam. that way when you are maneuvering the tank over the stand, you dont shift/move/push the foam/ply......
it wont hold a lot, but while you dead lift and slide the tank around, it wont push the foam and be less of a pain.
just a thought.

(i have seen people use blue painters tape and they just tear it off after (although it leaves a strip under the tank, its clean on the sides)

Good tip. I've got some wood glue around. Perhaps that will suffice.

Something tells me this tank is going to look awesome so I'm tagging along to see the finished project!!!!!
You've got some nice ideas in this build also!!!!!

I hope it looks awesome in the end. Just have to re-assure my wife daily until it's done.

I am glad that you chose Tom, of Oakville Reef Gallery's design. Thanks, and good luck with your build.

Yes ORG was very helpful and still somewhere I will purchase quality livestock and supplies from. LOL I'm not sure if we are allowed to mention names of businesses in the threads, but I guess we'll see if I get in trouble.
