Another Custom Stand Construction Thread- 120 Gal.

I knew it was egg something. Thanks for chiming in. If you are like me, you will make about 3 more trips because you didn't buy enough trim :)

Take your time, measure twice, cut a little long then trim your way to a perfect fit.

marino,

when you built up the top to cover the tank trim, did you use any styrofoam, and if so how much did you allow for it to settle?

i'm building a stand and am at the top trim of the stand, I will be using styrofoam to relieve some of the pressure points because I know I'm not perfect, and I want to make sure than I have all the tank trim covered. I can't test because the stand is for my current tank that is full of water right know. I will be posting a thread with pictures.

BTW outstanding workmanship!!!! unreal attention to detail!!!

No, I didn't use any styrofoam. My tank is glass with a plastic trim bottom so I didn't feel the need. Sorry I can't help you there.

Thanks for the compliments. Good luck.

Hey Marino,

I built a stand and canopy and need 8 doors, my local cabinet makers want $440!!! FOR A Standard Maple raised door.

Do you think the place where you got yours would be willing to ship? Didnt you say you got yours for $250 for 10 doors?

I think I paid $270 for 8 doors. There are a lot of online door supply companies. Google it and you will find plenty.

Wow Qualitydoors wants $570 I guess the others not looking so bad now.

Marino, do you think the guys you used would ship? if so I think that may be my best bet. Got a number?

Hats off to you. A couple months ago, I ran across a single pic of your stand in the construction phases. It inspired me so much, I decided to build a similiar stand with the coloumns on each side. During the whole build process, I had the pic of yours printed, and with me for ideas. I just found your thread, as someone linked your thread into mine. Thank you! Mine has a different twist to it, but it would never have turned out the way it did if I had not seen your pic. Here is my thread:

Thanks again, and I was lost on the canopy, but now I have something to go on!...

The rear inside of the frame is routed 1/2"x3/8". The plywood sits in this groove. I used 5/8" brads to attach the plywood to the frame (i had to use about a 30 degree angle on the brad to make sure it didn't come out throught the front of the door). There is no groove at all, although i think the groove is probably the correct way to do this door, but I don't have the correct tools or the patience for that.

Since the edge is routed and the plywood attached from the rear, the front of the door looks just fine. I will take care of the rear of the door with wood filler (there isn't much to fill, if you make the plywood fit into the frame as tight as possible.)

I know I'm not using the usual techniques to make these doors, but I did the best I could with the tools I have. I will take some close-ups of the front for you this afternoon.

Just for future reference if you have a table saw you can cut the grooves easily. When I built my stand I grooved and inlaid the side panels. For 1/4" plywood it took two passes on the table saw. Just use a scrap to get the rip fence positioned correctly. Once its set run all the pieces through. I've been slacking and haven't made the doors yet but I plan to make them the same way.

Marino,
Thanks for the great thread. I have copied your process. At first I hated the columns and said that I would not want columns.

I have columns and am glad I listened to you.

I am also using your setup thread to do my stuff. I love the way you did the electrical setup.

Do you have any concerns of the water/electric connection? LOL

Thanks laud.

I always have water/electric concerns but I tried to put the panel high enough to avoid this. Couldn't go too high or I would have had to use lots of extension cords to reach it.

The panel works great though. It makes it easy to turn off certain components for feeding, cleaning, etc.
