Another Lost Mac User

Ah, ok, got it. Well, couple of things to check, then.

First, if you'd previously configured this Express for some other purpose, then I suppose performing a factory reset on it would be worth a try. How you do that depends on the exact model, but it'll get things back to the factory config, so you'd be certain that at least it should be discoverable.

Second, since the first-gen is a g-type only, you'd want to make sure that the Extreme is set to talk as compatible with a g network as well. Out of the box, that's how it is, but you can set it to be only n compatible (i.e., using only the 5Ghz band), and if that was the case, then the Express wouldn't be able to see the Extreme.

Here are some screen shots of my airport extreme, maybe this will help.

That all looks to be perfectly set up, so I think focusing on the Express is the path. Does your Mac have a physical Ethernet port that you could plug the Express into to see if you can discover it in that way?

I remember my Expresses of that generation being flaky in this regard, but they'd always answer on the physical port, at which point I could configure them for wireless.

When I setup my 1st gen AP express I connected it to my computer via the LAN cable.

When it powers up you should beagle to find it in the AP utility.

You will want to setup the Express to " Join a wireless network".

BTW, I just used the new AP Utility to check my settings on my Express.

Right, I don't have a cable from the Extreme to the Express, only from the Express to the Apex.
Connect the Express temporarily to the Extreme directly. Configure it to "Join a wireless network", etc. When that is done, THEN connect it up to the Apex.

Woohoo! That did it. I connected the express right to my laptop. Come to find out, there seemed to be a password on it that was preventing it from connecting. I did a manual reset by using a paper clip for 15 seconds then reconfigured.

Now, I need to just configure my Apex over my network and while I'm away. I think that will wait for tomorrow.

Thanks a million for the help.
