Another Mag From Petco Thread

My lights over my QT tank had some issues yesterday and the LEDs ended up being on all night and at a higher output than normal. When I discovered this I noticed that my mag, which has not deflated or looked sickly at all since completion of treatment, was completely deflated and mouth gaping open.

Hopefully it's just temporary stress and the anemone recovers.

Oh my mag is perfectly fine, it's doing great this morning, it just needed to expel excess zooxanthellae, and I guess the best way to accomplish that is to deflate itself completely to push out all the excess. I'm not worried about it, just wanted to share my observation and throw out an idea.

I think a mag would bleach without light, if there's no or low light then the zooxanthellae will simply die off and the color will fade. But it's near impossible for us to match the perfect level of light for a mag that's bleached from darkness and the stress of collection and shipping. We'll inevitably blast it with more light than its used to having and we'll see some deflation when it expels zooxanthellae levels that its currently not used to hosting. I'm just hypothesizing that when a mag is exposed to more light than its used to it'll have to expel the excess zooxanthellae that are generated as a reaction to the increased light. And the way a mag expels the excess zooxanthellae is by deflating itself to push out the zooxanthellae. I'm suggesting that anemones are such simple animals that they are incapable of processing the increased zooxanthellae populations other than deflating to expel them.

You paid too much the Petco by me sells them for $65 and they always gets them

I think my mag is still expelling zoox. In the video below you can see small dark particles floating on the bottom of the tank. I haven't noticed deflation but I did see minor contractions today. It has only been getting 8hrs of light daily.
It's been my personal observation and experience that anemones can fight off bacteria in 5 days. I've treated 2 gigs and 1 mag for 5 days with success. However, it's my doctor friends who hold DEA licenses always try to tell me that antibacterial treatment should last 7 days to increase chances of success...at least in humans. I don't mind the work but sometimes it's a struggle to balance the unstable environment of QT vs time needed to kill off bacteria.
7 days has worked so far for many people including myself so I'll stick with that regiment.

Here it is just a few mins ago. Dosed last (7th) round of Cirpo. I was going to add it to DT tomorrow but it's not 100%. All depends on how it looks.

Video. I actually changed the flow a little after taping the video.

Nice... I think it will start moving to the right soon... It pointed it's tentacles at me and told me. ;)

Ha, my light can do that sometimes. When is yours going into DT?

Haha I don't know, I don't think I even have room. I have one rock in my tank that I keep my anemones on the keep my SPS safe and that rock has gotten pretty full. I may have to consider selling off one of my mags to make room for the pretty new one Sri Lankan one.

I pretty much have no SPS because of my anemones. Just an ORA pink birdsnest and even that might get traded. Lol

Right now it's probably to the nems benefit that they leave it alone and let it settle in, but I'm sure curiosity will eventually come into play.
