So I will soon be getting a 125g tank. I know mandarin's basically only eat pods. I was wondering if I had live sand and about 80 lbs of live rock if it would keep a big enough pod population to sustain one? No sump, just the LR, LS, filter, and skimmer. I also wouldn't buy any other fish that would compete with the mandarin for food.

You should be fine with that set up as long as you keep an eye on your pod population. Every few months make sure you shine a bright flashlight in the tank on the back wall and study over your live rock to make sure you still see copepods and amphropods crawling around. From my experience you know your mandarin has enough to eat and sustain life if you don't have to "Search" for the little cockroach bugs flittering around when the light shines on them.
I also buy a pint of DT's tiggerpods ($25.00) every three months and put them my tank for extra assurance that we don't run low on food. BTW I do all of this with my 90 gallon, 100 lbs of LR, 50 lbs LS, Sump and Refugium.
