(Another) New 90 Gallon Build

Thanks for the compliment. No the rocks are not glued down. I think most are pretty secure, but I may need to double check. Thanks for the heads up!

Sorry to hear about the canopy. :(
I have an AGA Mission hood over my cichlid tank. If you have any ?s, I'll do my best answer em.
I don't have a cover over my lights and they get no salt on em, which leads me to believe that it isn't getting wet.
I'm running MH and two T5s. I have the MH on the back part and the t5 on hood of the canopy. When I open the hood, the actinic lights up my whole family room. :) I think the T5 are a bit to high if you put it on the top of the canopy. I want it to be at least another 6" lower. Then I would be worried about water splash and salt creep on the light bulbs.

Do you think rebuilding the canopy would be worth it in the long run?. Im sure buying the new cherry canopy will be a little pricey. Also it has its restrictions(ie. lighting setup and light off the wall). Plus it doesnt match perfectly. After you buy it and intall it you might think to yourself that you dont really like the fact that it doesnt match...but then its too late.

I would rebuild the canopy. Its probably the best option. But of course its your decision.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, once I put it in its too late, and if the color doesn't match its going to bug the heck outta me. But there are definately advantages to buying the AGA. Professionally made, absolutely beautiful design and build, open back will help keep it cool(and I could always set something on the back to cover as much light as possible), lights will be closer to the front now rather than all towards the back, and on that same note since the lid piece is bigger, it will give me more room to get in there...but still...the color isn't perfect and it will probably run me $250-300!

You can always buy the AGA hood....sand it and restain it the color of your base......I know a lot of work but, may be worth it if you can't fix yours!:bounce1::bigeyes:

I don't even think its made out of real wood, I think its mdf (or whatever the initials are) with a vineer covering (I believe its called)...otherwise that would be a thought :sad1:

You could redesign your hood so that the lighting is positioned the way you want them. Apply 5 coats of primer, have an open back, and this would cover all the benifits of buying the AGA canopy. Best of all..would cost much less and stain would match prefectly.

Not sure if I would want to buy the AGA cherry hood and then sand off the finish. You do pay alot for the stain...sanding it off would not be very cost effective.

Honestly, I would have to completely redo the whole canopy and I would rather not even mess with it, mainly because it is a huge hassle to get to work on it because I do everything at my buddys house, and we always have conflicting schedules. It sucks, but I will just have to deal with it.

The AGA canopy I had on my 38g was made from solid pine. You might want to check with AGA and find out what the cherry stained canopy really is. Maybe it's solid pine, like my 38g had.

Any updated shots of the tank with the lighting burned in, and settled?

Dan

I think this is a newer style canopy. I should double check though. I will take some updated pics later today. It has definately cleared up. I'm not sure how long the lights take to break in, but I don't run them a whole lot. Just mainly while I'm in the office, and I usually don't run the whites so much because I have already bleached the rocks enough just runnin the blues.

Ok so here is my warped wood:

They are supposed to have the canopy in for me tomorrow. I don't think I will get everything switched over until Monday though. At least I'll be able to look at it and see if I'll be able to handle the difference in color.

Well they delivered the wrong canopy on Friday, but I got it today(monday), and set it on to check out the color. I don't have the lights hooked up yet tho, will probably do that Wednesday. It doesn't look too far off in color, but there is a difference, and the canopy is so much smoother because its vineer. Oh well, I really like it.

And by the way I just wanted to say, the worst part about having this in my office, is there are always so many people in and out of it all day. So everytime someone looks at my tank they say, "Are there any fish in there?"! Of course I probably won't be adding fish for a while either. Because I am trying to get all my fish at once, and put them all in a qt for about a month before goin in. But I will be adding coral until that point. It's worth feeling like a broken record to have this in front of me all day though, I can't deny that!

It still makes me appreciate my nano at home though. I haven't had fish in it in probably 2 months, just keep puttin more coral in, but I love it!

I know the feeling...I have my tank in my office as well.....Now I have it stocked, but a few weeks back I was done to a few fish due to some changes and what not......and everyone always asked..."where'd all the fish go??!"

My tank has been up and running for 4 years here at my office.....
everyone loves it.....kids too!
