OK, well you kind of stumped me. What I can tell you is that it is a male jumping spider family Salticidae. Its a cool one. I believe jumping spiders are the largest family of spiders and there are a bunch of crazy ones and some change their appearance as they age which really should count as cheating as far as I'm concerned.

I never really had to do any sort of spider collection and didn't ever need to ID many spiders past family so my ID skills are poor. I spent about an hour trying to find out what it is online but didn't get very far. I'll award 10 internets to anyone who can find a picture of it ID'ed to species.

Found this guy:

Just says he's a Jumping Spider they saw while camping.

That's all I could find though. So, no internets for me. :P

I love bugguide. I figured if I dug on there long enough I'd find one but didn't have the energy last night.

10 internets for frofan, and I'll give 3 to TwinPanther just because.

Also cool if you look at this occurance map from a study done in the 40s

And the map from locations submitted to BugGuide, neither of them show hits in New York.

You should submit this to bugguide, its a pretty rare find in these parts! Very cool!

I had some jumping spider just about attack me when I was taking apart a toy house we bought my son at a garage sale. light brown little bugger. caught my chin on an edge of plastic. so here I am bleeding in these peoples driveway and I still had to return the tools I borrowed.

nice find and great macro, Brandon- I've never seen one of those spiders around upstate NY before.

We spotted a bunch of unusual insects over here so far this year and the mild winter/ very warm spring must be at least partly responsible for what's happening. Very kewl.

If anyone has more unusual finds (including amphibians etc.) please post them.
