Another option for red bugs

I enjoyed a great relationship with my vet until my dog was put down. Even knowing us for the years he did my vet would not give a script for intercepor for aquatic use. Haven't read this whole thread just looking to follow and finish the posts. I had a small outbreak on a smooth skin acro, I moved all acros for two weeks to quarantine, treated with interceptor someone gave me and had no issues since. Thanks to all your efforts!

I had a friend bring over some frags that were infected with aefw..

The test I did was

1cup of tank water 1.5ml's of bayer advanced (aefw stunned but not dead after 15minutes)

1 cup of salt water 2ml's of bayer advanced ( AEFW DEAD ) seemed like it was stunned within the first 5 miuntes then rolled around for 2 minutes after. About 10 minutes of watching it, rolled in half then 2-3 minutes after not moving anymore total 15 minutes

I had some revive left over still so ,
next was 1 cup of tank water 2.0ml's of bayer advanced mixed with 1 capful of revive
aefw destroyed (took a new frag , didnt use the same one) 9 minutes time

*note that all the frags are still fine, using the last mixture (with revive) will cause a little slimming but still ok

want to try the last mixture again just to make sure just waiting for some more freinds frags to come

Thanks Whisperer! I've been fighting these buggers for 3+ years. I have lost so many beautiful specimens. I purchased several frags at a swap in April. They are still in quarantine due to red bugs. I have lost several of the acros even though I have been dipping them in Revive. You have renewed my faith in the hobby!

I have a few questions... My quarantine tank has several different species...a large meat coral, a large colony of frogspawn, a few small SPS's, couple leathers-(toadstools & sinularia). I purchased the Bayer...I'm anxious to dip my SPS's. I will follow your suggested measurements.

I am concerned about dipping my LPS's. The majority of posts are for acros. Has anyone successfully dipped LPS's? Whether your dip was successful or not, can someone tell me what ratio of bayer to water they experimented with and their results? I don't want to risk killing these guys...I don't want them living in quarantine for ever either!

One post talked about dipping all his SPS's that were not encrusted. So does that mean I need to break my stags & tri-color from my LR? I have an encrusted gorgonian approx. 20"x16" on large piece of LR. in main display tank! Do you have any suggestions on how to treat it! Thanks for sharing...this is a great thread.

I have not tried treatment on LPS nor gorgonian. I can only infer that they will do fine since they are hardier than SPS. As to encrusted SPS (not sure if gorgonians are susceptible to red bug infestation) in the main tank, I do not think it is worthwhile breaking them for treatment since their bases will not get treated. I recommend whole tank treatment with interceptor instead. You can dip new additions to to prevent reinfections in the future. This method is safe, effective and most of all, very cheap.

Two days ago I dipped, zoas, orange plate, shrooms and acans for 10 min. They were all fine and opened within hours..... For the life of me, I can't remember if I did my scoly. But I got it about two weeks ago. If you want to do an in-tank treatment, you should look at the Levamisole thread. I did it with the help of Bax.

Very interesting and useful post. i will try this method. Just want to make sure when you say 2 cups that means 1 pints or 470ml.
Can I now use this dip for new corals instead of Revive? Or I need the combination of the two.

Has anyone else tried H2O2? I had bite marks and some big ones died in less than a few minutes. Kills algae too. Its a cheap and you can buy it at the dollar store.

Flamron and Whisperer
HAve you folks determined if it is B-cyfluthrin which is the active ingredient.
Seemed like Flamron has said he was going to try and figure that out.

It did not work for me. Perhaps the concentration or dosage was too low? The flatworms seemed entirely unaffected in the

Dipped some more test pieces today in the Bayer Insecticide.

I amped it up to 5ml in 1/2 cup for the first dip. I tested a red planet frag and a tricolor frag. Dipped for four minutes. The flatworm appeared to be dead, so I dumped the water out and then rinsed the frags with tank water. I pulled the frags out and put them back into the tank. I went back a few minutes later and the flatworm was moving again! These are some resilient little suckers!

For the next test, I doubled the dosage to 10ml in 1/2 cup. I used a $500 efflo and pink lemonade frag for test pieces. I dipped for five minutes and then pulled the frags out, rinsed, and then refilled the cup with fresh water to see if the flatworm would come back to life. After ten minutes - no movement! I conclude that, as long as the frags survive, that this will be a very effective treatment.

Color is good and all pieces have as much polyp extension as they did before the dips.

My plan is to dip every five-six days, depending on how the corals respond. I've got to pick up a couple containers at Walmart to dip in. They are the big round 16g containers. For $7 bucks, they should work pretty well to dip in. I'll probably pull the MP10 off of the 40B so I have some flow in there as well.

I am convinced it is an effective treatment, but since the two bayer products that seem to work (and from my reading at the same 1:1000 dilution ---0.5 ml in ~500ml of water) "bayer complete" and "bayer germ killer" have different mixes of ingredients it seemed like it
was likely the ingredient in common (as you had argued) or some "inactive ingredient that isn't listed that is in common to the two of them.
Seems unlikely though formally possible that the sodium0- phenylphenate (primarily a fungicide) and the imadocloprid (nicotinic agonist insecticie) would both do the same job at the same dilution since they are completely different types of compounds.

SO I would have bet big money it was the B-cyfluthrin.

But I guess i not.
